Yes, books on tape (CD) can be great for a long trip.
Many are free at the library

In reply to mtn:

You're right about the urban areas. I just channel surfed til I found an acceptable station. There's a lot of open area on his trip, especially at the beginning.

This thread is relevant to my interests. I have to drive from Alabama to Oklahoma here in a week or two in my old Datsun pickup. I need something else to listen to beside wind noise and rocker arms.

The version on Alchemy-Live is amazing.

I like to jam to Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do".

The LP version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida is always fun too.

BB King and Eric Clapton did a cover of the Sam & Dave classic "Hold on, I'm Coming"...the guitar jam finish is mind blowing.

Well wouldn't you know. Since I refuse to get an iPod, and instead have a Sony Walkman (yes the mp3 player) no where in my area sells a FM transmitter. Order one off Amazon or go with CD's? Hmmm, oooh one day shipping!

I've got a list of loosely car-related stuff, but haven't burned it down to a disc yet. Strangely enough, I've got it on a playlist at playlist.com so I can play it when I'm sitting at home daydreaming of roadtrips.

"Maybelline", Chuck Berry.
"I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide", ZZ Top.
"Little GTO", Ronnie and the Daytonas.
"Highway Star", Deep Purple.
"Double Life", The Cars.
"Drive My Car", The Beatles.
"Synchronicity II", The Police.
"409", The Beach Boys.
"Going Mobile", The Who.
"Dead Man's Curve", Jan & Dean.
"Life Is A Highway", Tom Cochrane (although I like Rascal Flatts' cover from "Cars" a lot..)
"Take It Easy", The Eagles.
"Truckin' ", The Grateful Dead.
"Keep on Truckin' ", Eddie Kendricks.
"Cadillac Ranch", Bruce Springsteen.
"Running on Empty", Jackson Browne.
"Hot Rod Lincoln", Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen.
"Long May You Run", Neil Young (it's actually about a car he owned).
"Always Crashing in the Same Car", David Bowie.
"Two Lane Blacktop", Rob Zombie.
"One Piece At A Time", Johnny Cash.
"Mustang Sally", Wilson Pickett.
"Going The Distance", Cake.
"Born to Run", Bruce Springsteen (1st repeated artist).
"The Little Old Lady from Pasadena", Jan & Dean (2nd repeated artist).
"Bitchin' Camaro", The Dead Milkmen.
"Little Deuce Coupe", The Beach Boys (3rd RA). "Highway to Hell", AC/DC.
"Route 66", Chuck Berry (4th RA, and 1st choice of a "cover") Theme from the TV series "Route 66", The Nelson Riddle Orchestra.
"Piece of E36 M3 Car", Adam Sandler.
"Daddy's Cup", Drive-By Truckers.
