"If New York is the city that never sleeps, Erie is the city that never wakes up."

-former band director of mine, who lived there for 10+ years

He was sort of an ass though, so take that with a grain of salt.

Living near Jamestown, NY 30 something miles East I make it to Erie about 10 times a year. Not a bad town, but never have found it to have much of a personallity. Great for shopping and a few attractions. Didn't see Presque Isle Park mentioned yet but that is a good place to check out.

It really comes down to what you want out of the place. Outdoors activities and cheap dirt track racing are easy to find in the area. Nightlife and culture (not that I would really know) don't seem to be as easy to find.

Presque Isle is very cool and the inner harbor that it creates makes for some very good sailboat racing at The Erie Yacht Club.
I you have never done it, look up their adult "learn to sail" program
http://www.erieyachtclub.org/index.php/sailing-school/courses.html
Then, once you've got a little learning under your belt, post up on their board to join the crew of a larger racing boat.

If you want to sail, Erie is a great place for it.

Again, I'm not a boater, and I'm not a skiier/snowboarder anymore, I'm a mountain biker and I'd rather live someplace with well...mountains.
