I'm not sure how medically useful seeing just under the skin is though. My first thought was that it could be useful for making an optical data link to an implanted device. So you could strap on an inductive power pad to power the device through any regular patch of skin, put some solution over its optical data port to let light through and strap on the other side of the optical link. Faster and more secure than a radio link.
