most social media is almost unsearchable so the new generation of internet users don't know how.

I agree with you but... Sometime around 05/06 the big name forum members decided it was the norm to act like complete jerks to anyone who was new, didn't have the knowledge they did, or just disagreed with them in any context. I had car friends who never went back because of the elitism of the forums (read Turbo Miata).

Now we have Facebook which I agree is horrible. I quit asking questions, any question regardless of content on the Sloppy Mechanics Public page because it turns into a personal attack on me. This forum is the only place I dare ask a question.

I'll believe that when I see it.

Although if they're doing that, they'll probably be down for a couple months.

From the conjecture I'm reading, it was likely an employee changing a setting, and locking things up bad.  If so, sounds like consequences of the "Move fast and break stuff" ethos they have.

some interesting potential explanations here:

ymmv

The idea that somewhere is a physical server room that holds the servers that have to be changed that nobody can get into because their keycards don't work thanks to the server's code fills my heart with joy.

Unless the server became self-aware and it's the birth of SkyNet or that creepy computer from the 90's kid Batman cartoon.

Randsomware hackers are gonna keep berkeleying around until they cross the wrong Uber-rich CEO who has pockets deep enough to hire mean men with big guns who disappear them from whatever country they're hiding in.

I'm in favor of this.

WhatsApp is awesome.  It let me talk/video chat with my daughter, for FREE when she was 7000 miles away.

I will miss Facebook somewhat, I use it to keep in touch with friends as well as the car specific groups.  While I wish all those people were still on the OG forums (that I still visit), everything has sadly moved over to FB.

Places like MT.net, R3V, corner-carvers, became like that because people would ask the same questions over and over and over again. Even though the information is already recorded there on the forum. Many older forums have entire sections dedicated to showing all the commonly asked questions and links to the relevant thread. Doesn't hurt to do a little research, because you're unlikely to get one definitive answer from everyone, but instead a multitude and the reasoning behind it from each person.

Seeing 12+ threads a day of "What oil should I use?" or "what is the best tire (while adding no information about how they will use it or what characteristics they want)" are useless questions that force everyone to ask the OP a bunch more questions to try and figure out what they are trying to do.

And here I thought it was because I found a good deal for a cast iron skillet on FBM this AM, communicated easily with the seller, arranged a time for pickup, and went about my day. Planets aligned, kumbaya, etc.

I had half heard that the whistle blower was going to testify today to congress. That was early this morning and I only half listen to the news that time of the morning.

Maybe something really came out of the hearing.

FB is still down and the message i got said to wit a few minutes and try again.  Not going to happen.

I think it is probably an inside job. Lower level employees not agreeing with the ethics of the guys at the top. Employee revolt.

They knew right where to hit them in multiple areas. Not just shutting down servers but locking the doors where the servers are so they can't get back in to check them. It would be hard for outside hackers to get into so many different systems.

This will go on for a while and it could happen again and again after they think it is fixed.
