Since I have to wear my glasses all the time I have the type of lens that gets darker the more it is expose to light. Been wearing that type of lens for 30 years and have had no problem as long as I "season" them correctly.

To season them I have to let them lay out in the sun for several hours before wearing them when I get a new pair.

I was very disappointed when I got my first set that they don't work inside most newer cars because of the UV protection in the window glass.

I had an awesome pair of Armani aviators that I left in a press car. They were just the right tint, but they pissed me off whenever I put them on my head, they'd tear out big chunks of hair. Great for driving though. Other favourites are an old pair of red Vuarnets with fairly light lenses (I find the Skilynx way too dark except for really bright days) and some polarized Ray Ban knockoffs that I bought off ebay for $15.

I'm going to get some shades soon, after I go to the optometrist. I haven't been in 4 or 5 years. The solar glare on the way to work has been brutal lately and no clip-on sunglasses that I've tried will seat correctly over my eyeglasses. I'm going to see if I can get contacts or Transitions lenses so that way I won't need to get both prescription eyeglasses AND prescription sungla$$e$.

Most people find the transitions don't work in the car.

Back when I wore contacts, I bought my new wife and I matching 'geti drivers. She lost hers after a month, and "borrowed" mine. Two days later mine were gone too

Yikes! I've lost a couple of pairs of old favourites. Now I'm pretty careful, they all have cases. Got into some bored, 3 am ebaying over Christmas, and scored a pair of Persols (Steve McQueen's favourites) and some Porsche aviators.

Its expensive, but if you get the frames that come with clip-ons made for that specific frame, it works well.

This is what I have. I don't put the clip-ons on very often, but when I do it's so nice. Nice medium brown tint and polarized. I do lose the display for the stereo tough.

The problem I always had with Transitions is that they don't lighten up enough and they take their sweet time in doing the little bit of lightening they do. I'd always have to take my glasses off for a bit when I walked inside a building, and even 15 minutes later they'd still be too dark to comfortably wear indoors.

Maybe the new ones are better? Maybe I should've only used them as sunglasses?

Long before I started wearing contacts, I had transition prescription glasses. They behaved exactly as you described, I hated them. So far, these new sunglasses are nothing like that, the lens is a soft rosy colour for one, and I wasn't even thinking about them yesterday while driving (good sign). The real test is tomorrow - 8 hour road trip to see my mother.
