It's a Waveshare 2.8". The plans are here, but I built mine with a Pi Zero so that allowed me to mount the Pi right to the back of the monitor. Simplified things quite a bit.

Pihole does not disable YouTube ads in my experience. It's not surprising that Google would prevent you from using a Pihole, it attacks their business model directly.

Does pi hole disable YouTube ads?

IIRC last time I checked, it won't work with Google mesh and Google home... which has been really reliable and robust for my house.

It doesn't work with youtube ads anymore because Google changed their ad server addresses to match the ones used to serve video. You need content filtering for that now, which is usually done at the browser level, using something like uBlock Origin.

It's possible to use a Pi-Hole with Google Home/Mesh but they really buried the settings.

  1. Open the Home app
  2. Navigate to Wifi (if it's not on your quick launch it'll be Settings > Nest WiFi Router (or Google Home) > Network Settings)
  3. Open Network Settings
  4. Open Advanced Settings
  5. Go to the DNS entry
  6. Select Custom
  7. Plug in the Pi-Hole's IP address
  8. Save

I use my Pi-Hole away from home by utilizing WireGuard basically everywhere. Some public networks block WireGuard traffic. If that's the case I don't need to use them. That's mostly because I haven't had enough time figure out my issue with ShadowSocks.
