Way to be, oldtin!

I somewhat agree, but the nightowl/earlybird thing is different for everyone. I've started to get into more of the earlybird thing because I drive my handicap MIL in, and her hours are pretty rigid--the biproduct of this is me getting up earlier on weekends, so there is better fishing

My current employer is pretty flexible with work time--get your 8-9 hours in however you want, just don't show up later than 9:30 and don't leave earlier than 4. I'm not happy with that, but the good news is that it is getting more and more flexible every passing quarter. I think by next year we will be encouraged to work one day a week from home, if not more. On days when I do work from home now, I get more done, in less time.

It should be noted that I depend on other people and other people on me, so we need to be in the office/available on the phone/email at more or less the same core hours. Otherwise I think they wouldn't have a problem with just getting your work done whenever.

I've never fired an employer. Well indirectly. It was my final semester of college and I worked at a Deli.......I had my final project in my capstone class do the week of Thanksgiving and we needed to work more on it.

I knew if I called in I wouldn't be put back on the schedule since it's the 2 busiest days of the year for them. It's Nov 2005, crummy $10/hr job at a Deli or finish my college degree.......not even a choice.

That is the ONLY thing I don't like about my new job (well other than making a bit less) is that they are really rigid on the whole 8-5 thing, even though my job doesn't require me to interact with people and I setup meetings with those in other depts when I need them.

Every place else I've worked as a Tech Writer was pretty flexible on hours. Come in, get your work done. And we don't care as long as it's reasonable.

I didn't quite fire my employer this summer, but I got halfway there. I switched from full-time to 20 hours/week. Now I get to do the parts of the job I always liked, and skip the crap I don't.

Also, I no longer have to drink myself to sleep at night.

Unfortunately, it seems that being a bad employer is more culturally acceptable than being a bad employee. That being said, I work with lots of people who I am amazed manage to keep their jobs due to lack of enthusiasm or interest. They barely squeak by doing enough of their duties to remain employed, but good luck asking them to do %1 more than the 75% they already give.

myself and my co-workers make 70K+ a year (depending on the amount of OT you want to work) and it is amazing that one of my co-workers is one of the most lazy people you will ever meet. If it is not on the "to do" list.. or something on that list he thinks is below him or a worthless task.. he won't do it.

This. When I was in my 20s, I hated anything before 10am. I slept more during the day than I did at night. Once I started getting up early, I realised that morning are the best part of the day. A cup of coffee on the porch, a nice cool drive through the countryside. All of those are better before 8am.

I used to be the same. I would go to bed as the sun rose, now I get up before 7am without an alarm no matter what I do. I am awake, but I am not enjoying it. I can't go back to sleep though.

I miss the magic of that 2am - 5am period when noone else is up. For a time (just after highschool)I used to go biking at those hours for exercise as noone else was out and I had free run of a nice shopping area. (Polaris mall area for those in Ohio)

So much possibility, so much freedom, no crowds of people that you are being crushed in.

Best time to go grocery shopping as well, assuming you don't need anything from the Deli.

when I used to work 8pm till 4am, going for a walk at 5am after getting home in the summer was quite the magical time.
