Firefox 3.5 is out. Faster, better page rendering, and an all-around nice improvement over 3.0

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html

If you're a FF user, it's worth upgrading.

If you're an IE user, it's definitely worth upgrading.

If you're a Safari or Chrome user, carry on.

Big computer dummy here- what are the advantages of FF over IE? Please don't flame me.

CWH, you'll get no flames from me. Firefox's biggest advantages kind of depend on how you use the browser and what you expect from it, but here are a few:

  • It's MUCH more secure than IE, making you much less vulnerable to spyware/viruses, etc.
  • It can be customized through plug-ins to do all kinds of new and cool things
  • You can change the look if you don't like it.
  • It has a much better page rendering engine than IE. Pages load faster, generally look better, and it supports some advanced layout things that IE does not.
  • It's much faster than IE in general.

Those are probably the big ones. For me, the biggest is just how much better pages display compared to IE, and the ability to customize it. I couldn't function without some of my add-ons.

just updated it...doesnt look too much different on the surface...I will have to poke around in it and see what I find. My stupid work network disables a lot of plugins

chrome kind of sucks IMHO. I hate backing up a page and it not being the updated page, that doesn't save me any time. Though it is a much more secure browser, on some sites I get no pop ups where with IE it's pop up hell.

YAY! Upgrade time!

I've tried Chrome too, I see it as the sportbike of browsers - scary fast but not very practical.

Firefox 3.5 might be quicker though, I'll have to see...

Thanks for the heads-up. I'll download it when I get home. I'm stuck at work now with Internet Exploder 7.

I like it. The close/reopen for private browsing sucks, but otherwise I'm liking the feel and features.

CWH: Another dummy here. FYI, about six months ago, on Baxters advice, I switched to Firefox and I love it.

All Firefox users: Ad Block Plus. I sometimes forget the internet has ads.

Tried the update but it's still not enough to make me switch back from Chrome as my primary browser.

I like the one click bookmarks and intergrated http/search bar of Chrome.

Though FF has a plugin called FireFTP that is FTW.... So I'll still continue to use both.

Firefox is much better at displaying pages - much less unlikely to come out looking glitchy as with IE7 (although IE8 is an improvement).

Also a large hunk of the viruses out there attack IE and its plugin system...although Adobe Reader is becoming the top attack vector (You should be using Foxit or Sumatra instead anyway) and Flash isn't far behind (All you can do is keep it updated). If you use Firefox IE's security holes aren't an issue.

I don't use adblock plus but I do use NoScript + flashblock. Noscript isn't for computer dummies but Flashblock is great for anyone who doesn't like spending ages downloading massive flash ads, and it also gets rid of the cursed demon-spawn Flash Based Pop-Over. It also greatly decreases your chances of picking up a virus that exploits Flash.

Oh and don't forget that Firefox is faster! If Chrome is a sportbike, Firefox is a sports car and IE is an old minivan with bad rings that's constantly hauling Integra engines around.

FF has both of those features. Click the star in the http bar to add to favorites and if you type in not an address it automatically google searches.

Just as a side note, you'll also notice some rounded corners and drop shadows around here in FF3.5 that earlier versions didn't have. Which is nice. Chrome and Safari users have them, too.

You'll need to log in to post.
