I have been told that I have a new i-Phone (8 gig) on the way. It's my first smart phone. Do I need to upgrade to 16?

My plans for it are fairly simple. This forum, Sirius radio, Google maps, and photos that will be fairly quickly transferred to the laptop. No music files, no Angry Birds.

What say ye?

You'll be fine with an 8-gig if that's all you're doing.

Also, no angry birds? You're missing out.

8gb is plenty, even for much music. Angry Birds, Words With Friends are fun. iHandyLevel is great for home alignments.

I've got 16 gig but I only use about 4. The smaller phone is in my future when/if I finally upgrade.

I recently (finally) made the jump to a smartphone, too, even though I have been Apple-only since 1988. I went with the 16GB 4S, but I'm looking at the capacity right now: After 2.5 months, I have 11.8 GB free. Looks like I'm using 1.11 GB for photos (the iPhone has replaced my point-and-shoot, too) and 0.17 GB for apps. I guess I haven't done much with the apps.

So far I haven't put any music on the iPhone since I still use my iPod. The iPod just works too well for biking, yard work, etc.

Oh yeah, a PS. When I first got my phone, battery life wasn't so hot. Since I downloaded the upgraded OS from Apple, battery life has been really good.

I'm an android guy myself, but I will say that I upgraded my 8g card to a 32g card, but I'm a music freak. I have almost 100g of music on my laptop and don't like to be limited in my choices on my phone.

... just my opinion.

I have never owned an i-Pod.

I'm on my second one and love it. I use it while biking, walking, working in the yard, etc. I guess the iPhone could do the same thing, but I don't want the phone ringing when biking. Plus I'd be worried about dropping the thing while doing some sweet wheelies.

a bag like this to carry the phone but still quickly able to get to it... add bluetooth headphones and you are set and no issues with wheelies killing it... can also get to your energy bars and such while riding...

Once you've got an 8 gb iPhone you can't upgrade the memory. You have to replace the phone. I agree that 8 gb is plenty, though.

+1 on 8gb is good unless you want to keep 5+hours of video on it. That is the only thing that really hits my storage limit, I have all the Top Gear available through iTunes.

Oh. I thought this was going to be about how you were contributing to the enslavement of all of mankind with your iPhone. Nevermind. Article

If you have a lot of music or video, 8gb is easy to fill up. If/when I replace my droid X (tired of it freezing up), its going to be with an iphone 4s or 5. My ipod nano recently died but I can't stand the new square nano and don't want the full ipod classic nor the touch, so I'd prefer to replace everything with one new device.

When you've got Pandora, you don't need music stored on the phone so much. I have an 80 GB iPod that is stuffed to the brim with music, but my iPod Touch (ie, an iPhone with a crappy camera that can't make phone calls) has almost nothing because it can do Pandora. It's become my go-to garage radio.

I used a new square nano as the in-car audio for my M5 The CD changer was on the blinkerooni, so I replaced it with an iPod interface and attached the Nano to the dash. It doubles as a clock with a pretty classy face (or Kermit when I feel like it) and I can control it through the buttons on the wheel. Super-slick.

That's still more than I want to carry. Plus, depending on my mood, I go between two bikes, my old-school Cannondale road bike or my SE Floval Flyer BMX cruiser. So far an iPod in my pocket plus some cheapie headphones works well--even after the foam fell of my earpieces. Hey, it's low-buck.

Keep in mind that if you setup an iCloud account, all of your apps and music can be available to you at any time. I don't keep my whole collection on my iPhone, but if there is a song I want from my collection, I just grab it from the cloud. Easy.
