Surgery my brother did this morning BEFORE heart surgery on cocker.  13 yo miniature pinscher new client owner brought in to be euthanized.  Dog developed benign tumor on rear leg 3 years ago.  No vets would attempt surgery because of dogs age.  Owners kept it until tumor got so big dog could barely walk.

Brother asked why put a fairly healthy dog to sleep?  Let's try to remove tumor...what ya got to lose?  Surgery successful.   Dog went home with owner 2 hours post op.  Imagine owners wife's surprise when husband came back home with dog without tumor.  Wife was so emotional she didn't come to clinic when husband brought dog to be put down.

f/u...call owners tonite and dog is running around like a puppy.  Brother only charged $50 euthanization  fee rather than $$$$ surgery fee.  He's that kinda guy.

Sadly. Freckles didn't make it through the night.  When Frank was doing surgery he noticed lungs we abnormally small and underdeveloped. Likely an embolism once heart was pumping full strength.  At least he was with us for 5 extra weeks when my brother got him from breeder to be put down.  During that time.he received much love and attention.  Everyone at clinic is heartbroken.

RIP Freckles.

Before the hunt they go out a cruise plantation where they hunt.  Two agents follow about 50 yards behind.  The agents have a common house on the president's residence they rotate in and out of...2 weeks on around clock 2 weeks off.  Frank knows them all and many have pets Frank  treats.

That being said I wish I could be able to quail hunt at 92 yo.

Immediately in surgery

Procedure involved removing ball on damaged/dislocated side, inserting SS ROD in femur, to form a soft tissue "joint. "  Dog will be pain free and at full recovery in 4-6 weeks with 90% ROM and function.  He will have dog up and walking tomorrow.

Varies.  $600-800 for one side + xrays (90$  if you don't already have from primary vet), any special meds,  for one hip.  900-1200 for bilateral both hips at same time.  He once had a lady come from Alaska on recommendation from a friend, stayed 2 weeks in hotel while dog was recovering and still spent less than vet in Alaska quoted!

Book a Florida Vacation, drop dog off on way down , pick up on way home.  Most times dog goes home 2-3 days post op. But you'll need stitches removed by your vet in 10 days or so.  You can call his clinic and he'll be happy to discuss.  He literally has people from all across country coming to see him.  Today a guy from Ohio brought in a dog for tumors to be removed based on his sisters recommendation blush

Sorry, but I have to call foul on this one.  E-Collars are a very effective training method when used properly.  They are often misunderstood and are the target of a smear campaign by groups that don't understand canine behavior.  Just because some asshat beats a dog with a bone, doesn't mean that all bones are bad for dogs.  /soapbox

while shock collars can be an effective training tool in many circumstances, this dog was terrorized from age 6 weeks to 6 months by someone who didn't know what they were doing.

In other news, fully house broken 3 yo goat came in for checkup.
