At no time in the civil war was 6 million people murdered because of their religion.

At no time in WWII were 2.5% of the population of the US (that would be 7 million today) killed by other Americans.

What's your point?

I only know as much as I do because I took a personal interest in it. Ww2 in our text books was only about 1 page long.

Remember the maine anyone?

Oh I forgot, if it didn't happen in the US, it didn't happen.

If I remember correctly this was about the lack of education of our youth about an event that included an attempt at eradicating a race because of their religion. This eradication included systematic torture, medical experimentation and deprivation of all humanity to women, children and men of all ages.

But of course the comparison to the American Civil War is very relevant.

Isn't it bad enough that the Middle Eastern countries are claiming the Holocaust never happened.

I wonder how many kids they interviewed knew at least some of the questions? Of course they pick out the ones who knew none of the answers.

The Civil War and WW II were both deeply horrific events.

Getting wound at each other five comments into the thread because of attempts to rank these things by relative awfulness of the specific motivations of catastrophic human-on-human violence of truly catastrophic proportions says more about human tendency toward conflict (which we do, I think, agree is horrifying) than it does about the education system, whether poopy's right about this batch of students really signifying the End Times for the poor ol' U S of A, or how the berk we'll ever get along long enough to figure out how to get along.

And that's coming from a guy who let himself get sucked into a three page discussion of the moral horror that is wasted roast chicken. (EDIT: read: "Is equally culpable for sustaining a three page discussion of wasted roast chicken")

Think of the... nevermind

My distinction is it was the Holocaust specifically, not WWII which is a whole other issue.

Total deaths during WWII is estimated at 60 to 85 million

http://www.ask.com/wiki/World_War_II_casualties?o=2800&qsrc=999&ad=doubleDown&an=apn&ap=ask.com#Total_deaths

10% of that were the Holocaust victims

So what happens to Godwin's Law if the thread is about Hitler's actions?

WW2 was not covered at any time when I was in school. Everything I've learned about it was on my own initiative.

Nothing. Law doesn't apply.

"Godwin's Law" is that as a long online argument unfolds, the probability of one side being compared to Hitler approaches 1:1. ("You know who ELSE was in favor of (x)?")

Corollary is that whoever does the comparison immediately forfeits.

Sadly very true. It was not until College that I learned anything about the Second (or even the First) World War. The teachers in HS were more concerned with the early part of this country's history

Not to worry, the Jews got this E36 M3, when they say "Never again" they mean it, "with a bullet"

Absolutely everything I know about WWII was learned reading on my own. It was never even covered or discussed in my American history class. We went from the writing of the Constitution to the civil rights movement in a week, I kid you not.

Many of those I know, thanks to a good high school education in geography, us history, and world history. A few of them I did not know the answers to as they would have been less known outside of europe, and some were pretty speculative. Take the St. Louis question, those passengers were denied entry for other reasons than "They were Jews"......

The Israelis have nuclear weapons for this very reason......they won't let it happen again.
