I rarely spend any time on the Miata.net forum, but this morning I was on there and saw a post from a guy whose cooling fan had melted.
I remembered that I had a spare in my basement that he might be able to use, so I hit "reply" and mentioned it.
A few hours later, I had this e-mail in my inbox:
You have received an infraction at MX-5 Miata Forum.
Reason: Inappropriate Language
Offering to sell parts is not allowed on the forum, please use the classifieds. Thanks!
This infraction is worth 1 point(s) and may result in restricted access until it expires. Serious infractions will never expire.

Is it the regular fan or the A/C fan? I have a used one. Let me know which one you need and I'll check to see if I have the right one.

The lack of a way to effectively trade parts with fellow owners without bending over and opening my wallet is the number one reason I gave up on Miata.net a couple years ago. That and being flamed by some egomaniacal self-appointed audio guru (who also happens to sell overpriced equipment and services) when I posted about an inexpensive upgrade I had made to my headrest speakers. Shame on you for trying to help a fellow owner out. The forum demands its cut, you wouldn't want something bad to happen to your Miata, now would you ?
I HATE message boards that do that. I used to post all the time on a board related to certain american made pickup trucks, and i completly stopped even reading it becasue they decided to do that.
Miata.net is over-moderated to a point rarely seen on the internet. I gave up posting there years ago.
Miata.net is best for archival research, very little else. You can predict the threads in Car Talk with ease and I rarely see people with new and interesting things to say post there. Plus, we've got Keith here, all you need for your miata parts and knowledge.

Yezzur. That's what I use it for every few months.
I'm a relative idiot, and don't own a Miata (yet) and even I've noticed that, too.
And that's why anyone replying to a question on our site with "do a search" will be fired. Out of a cannon. Into the sun.
I am kinda sad that the GRM forums became my first excursion into the wild world of internet message boards, because I am now jaded to the fact that everyone treats everyone else with a good amount of respect, and most people have IQ's over that of a brick.
now whenever I go to a new forum to ask questions about a possible new car purchase, I realize that it is a scary world out there, and I usually crawl back under the safety and warmth of the fuzzy blanket that is the GRM message boards.

I know it'd be a bit of self flattery, but that quote needs to be in the magazine.

One of the things I like about this site is that instead of "do a search" you get "summary answer and there was a thread on this a few months ago here's the link."

Yeah, it would be weird to pick my own post. Bonus points if anyone can tell me where that quote comes from. (And no Googling.)

Well, I first thought of the stunt ship in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but otherwise I got nothin'.
I'm thinking it's from an episode of The Simpson's?
I cheated and googled it, but I'm not telling.

Ya. I couldn't stand it so after I guessed I googled it too.
Eastcoast should we let David give him the cookie
Points or teh cookie, ya can't have both.
I used to moderate a form dedicated to the Hyundai Tiburon (RDTiburon.com) and while the chorus of "search" was always loud, I did usually try and help the noob and set the singers straight as well.
Have not really been there in a few years.. so no telling what it is like now that the newest of those cars is almost 10 years old
