First time in my life I have taken any money from the Government, not even unemployment, and it doesn't bother me a bit. Yeah, I know, I paid into SS for 40+ years and will never get a fraction back that was paid in, but still.....
Just so we've got it straight, you're not taking money "from the government," nor are you "getting back the money that you paid in." That money was spent a long time ago. Imagine all the cool E36 M3 you could've done with it. You're getting the money that I sent in last month. And next month, you'll get the money that I put in this month.
Remember that Bernie Madoff guy? It's kind of like that.

Hey, I didn't miss it (much) when I paid in, along with my boss, but really appreciate it now. Yes, it would have paid for nice stuff, but that would be all gone now, too.
Hey cwh, i'm gonna take care of you, i just got slammed with another project, i'll finish up when i can alright? Sorry...
In the meantime, i'd ask around about Part D and make sure that they've gotten their act together.

I'd have no problem if it was a system that pays out what you paid in (let's call it a forced savings account), but the problem is that its now just a giant slush fund for the government and a piggy bank for medicare and overpriced pensions. If it wasn't going bankrupt and a waste of my money, I'd be fine. Unfortunately its just a tax on me like income, without the benefits of getting anything back for it (like roads, fire, police, etc)
