I was thinking of glueing a piece of wide velcro on my freezer door ,
mostly for when we are out of town and there is a small earthquake or something else that might open the door .
Yeah that looks pretty good for an off-the-shelf solution, it has plenty of ways to access the data including a web interface so you aren't totally dependent on a phone app either.

I had about 50# of pig decay in my basement chest freezer this year. An alarm would have been nice.
I've had the freezer door pop open and ruin some food, too, so last year I picked up one of these for $20. No smart automation stuff, just a nice, loud alarm. My freezer is in the basement and our house isn't that big, so this is good enough for us.

I use, these, I have one in each fridge and freezer I have, had one extra so it is in my living room. The app is good and there are no recurring fees so I am happy. Put them in at my parents house too and it caught an intermittent bad fridge for them too.

Hmm. It would be useful to have something that triggers off actual temperature and didn't rely on wifi or craptastic IoT. Just a noisemaker. I'll bet you could do it with a bimetallic strip, a 9V battery and a buzzer.
That seems overly complex. How about something like this -> Door Ajar Alarm

I'm more interested in the temperature inside than the state of the door. That's only one potential failure point. I want to know about things like compressor failures as well.
Perfect use for an old-school thermostat. I think I've got one.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
Freeze a coffee cup full of water. When it's solid put a quarter or a Looney on top.
Not a constant temp reading, but it'll let you know if things are on the fritz.
Save yourself $79 and just lean a chair or brick against the door.
You're welcome.
We had a problem with the door popping open. A couple of these solved the problem.

That requires inspection, and I'm not in the freezer that often. It's a good low tech way to tell you've had a problem at some point, though.
