But he also mentioned that the Challenge cars don't really qualify because of the sweat equity tied up in them. The Hooptie Challenge is more along the lines of the thrown together hacks you often see on Roadkill.

GOOD challenge cars don't qualify. I bet the hoopties I have brought to the challenge would.

Essentially it sounds like you need to build a car for whatever budget you want, but make sure it looks like it is less than $3k. So basically a sleeper challenge.

Different game, and probably still fun, but not really budget limited at all.

Depends on what you mean by "good"- he was clearly talking about the Nelson clan most recent cars- which are incredible hot rods that have little money in them, but massive value.  And that makes sense.

But Andrew's first GRM challenge car, I think, would meet the criteria.  That Nova was the first under 11 second car at the challenge, and I bet still has one of the best times, ever, at a challenge.  That was 2004.

That was just a Nova with a well done motor, matched trans, and a well done rear system.

I would also contend that some of the turbo Dodge cars are good but not as valuable, too.

I ran the 10th place finisher,  $2015 Infiniti Q45 at the Ohio Hooptie event (along with the Nelson's).

They were not that impressed with what they called "The non descript Japanese V8" but it went 3 out of 5 rounds of random pairings.  The Q45 fully qualifies by the RK definition but since you really can't buy anything for it out of a Jegs/Summit catalog it really doesn't fit their intended demographic.

The most important thing to realize is the Hooptie is an exhibition  and GRM Challenge is a competition.

I went on the roadkill Facebook page a while back, posted a picture of the half finished amc, and challenged them to bring out their junk.

No response.

But, still a fun show to watch. Usually makes me feel like a better hotrodder as well, right up until I watch project binky.
