An optional part drops another 105ft, over about .4 miles, and adds a few sweepers.

The good: It's all wooded, Iowa deer prefer corn fields. It's an access to a state park, so they close the gates to the park (road continuing west of the end) at 10pm every night, meaning no other traffic. They also close it in winter, so the surface is smooth and undamaged.

The bad: There are no shoulders, most of it immediately drops 10ft, and most has large trees within 6 ft of the road surface. It's 1200 miles away.

When I want to "take a ride" I head east of town about 5 miles and go over the ridge to the area of Wolfesville, MD. I have a ~25 mile loop laid out that goes up the Gambril Ridge, down into Wolfesville and up South Mountain on the other side of the valley and back again several times.

Half is paved roads similar to cxhb's pictures or worse and the rest looks more like a WRC Rally (gravel with water crossings). Over the 25 miles you change elevation by 800' four times and another 500' change twice.

This makes for one thrilling ride at speed, if you can ever catch it without traffic. The run down on west side of the Hudson( 9W) is fun from Poopkeepsie, south to the round-about.

Southeast NYS around the Shawangunk(sp) Mts. is filled with fun roads.

I've been to my wife's hometown in Central KY enough to know that I much prefer Hwy 68 to 127. 127 is very boring compared to the twisty fun that is 68.

cxhb, Im not too familiar with thoses spots, but it does look like fun. Im going to do the same thing with my neck of the woods, or maybe set the digicam on the dash and run through mason, west chester, loveland and such, and post it to you tube
