Any gas/propane device with a pilot light will have the same issue as a wood stove with respect to flammable vapours in a garage, so don't let that dissuade you from a stove. I've hung around hobbyist garages in Canada that could be heated quite quickly with a good stove. If building a new garage from scratch I'd have gas fired infrared though. It's so nice.
