So got out and did some more work this past two weekends- cut down all of the crappy brush trees and shredded them all up. Whew.
And planted a dwarf peach and plum tree yesterday.
Bad news- Saturday night was not just frost, but major freeze- apparently the low was 23 in our neighborhood. So my grapes lost most of their leaves. I'm sure they will come back- they are quite agressive.
Last week, I was thinking about propogating them, when I realized that it will be tough, since they are all grafted vines onto root stock. But when I planted the peach tree, I had to dig up one of the weaker vines. Hey, if I can get that to keep going, I can try to get some of the roots to go by themselves. And when I do pruning this fall, I can get some of the main vines going- so by next spring, I can graft good vines onto good roots! Cool!!!
Next up on the planting- the mid spring stuff- onions, potatos, and a few other things that can go in while it's still cool. Not until later may can I do corn and tomatoes.
I'm getting hungry just thinking about it!
Saratoga County harvests the weeds out of the lake, Saratoga (horse) Race Track produces a lot of manure. A guy buys the manure, adds seaweed, bakes out the koodies and sells it for $15/yard. That's one full size pickup truck full.
Good E36 M3.

In the Chicago area it is common to plant the tomato plants right before Memorial Day. So I will throw 15-20 plants into the ground. My wife grows herbs and tons of flowers.
We are planning on expanding our garden this spring.....time is ticking.....
I put the seeds in planters last night.
Corn, pumpkins, watermelons, sunflowers, beans, peppers. I buy the tomato plants started already.
I've already had many salads from the various lettuces I have planted. That will go away once it gets warmer, and I'll plant beans, peppers, some other stuff. I also have garlic and collard greens in. And a bunch of herbs.
Finally got the garden tilled and the beans planted. Tomatoes and peppers will be put in next week.
Big thing now is to get the fence back up so the rabbits don't get the beans when they come up.
Forgot to ask- did anyone else in SE MI suffer with the freeze Saturday night? Many of my grape vines lost all of their leaves. But they have shown serious strength in the past, so I'm thinking that they will come back out. Local nursery had some damage to a lot of their plants (I got almost $20 off a peach tree that lost 1/2 their leaves).
I think we'll get through this fine, but it sure has made me think more of a mini hoop house or green house thing. It would be nice to get a better start on the season. Next year. Don't let me forget.
