I picked up 15 gallons of diesel, at a busy Shell station, for my shop furnace. I noticed that it smelled strongly of gas after I dumping it in my tank. I double checked my receipt and it says diesel. I called the station and they stated they hadn’t had any complaints. The local school buses all fill up there so I would assume that issues would’ve cropped up in a hurry. Am I just smelling the winter diesel blend? I took some out and it lit easily with a lighter by burned with the thick black smoke you associate with diesel. It also has an oily feel but it flows like water. If it’s contaminated what will it do to my furnace? I usually buy dyed diesel from my local Farmers Co-op but I was almost empty and they were closed.

Was it explosive when you lit it? Or did it just burn?
If it lit up with a Whoosh and ball of fire do not use.
If fire just spread across surface like you can see it spread it is prob. O K
As someone who pumps a lot of diesel fuel, there are a few times I have pumped fuel and the diesel smelled like gasoline. It’s always been in the winter, so I’m pretty sure it’s when they put too much anti-gel in the fuel, that can change the smell of diesel.
As a recommendation from a long time trucker friend of mine, always smell the nozzle before you put it in your tank.
on a side note it reminds me of the shenanigans in the north of Ireland where you'd put dyed agricultural diesel in your car if you were poor or in your fleet trucks if you were an shiny happy person sorry bidnessman. of course the goobermint would swoop down from time to time to check cars which always led to a hullaballoo and smoky exits from the small town they targeted that day.
