So, we've got a GE Combined gas hob with electric oven that's probably about 19-20 years old now. I just got a call, and texted the below pic. Apparently my daughter was cooking on the left front ring (right control know in the pic), when she smelled burning. Didn't notice anything initially, then suddenly the control knob for the left rear ring was on fire. Now, I'm not home so I haven't looked, but everyone at home thinks it's an electrical fire. I don't get that. It's a gas valve, although when in the light position it does trigger the sparker. Any ideas?
If your daughter is at home, alone, and unsure...the Fire Dept will come to your house, free, and check it out. Your greatest risk is that they shut off all the gas to the house as a precaution. That might mean no hot water showers until this is fixed.
I would shut the gas's off to that ASAP. !!! Seriously get home now or get someone there ASAP as it could be leaking.
HAdn't thought about gas leaking, but I think it's OK as they've lit and put out the other rings to check. She's not home alone, and she's 21 anyway, so not a kid in danger. Good point though guys. I'll be sending warnings and getting home ASAP

I've had something similar happen while using our cheap BBQ. It turned out that a bug (moth or something) had crawled in there and made a nest in the burner tube making the gas come out the opposite way towards the control knob rather than to the burner which resulted in flames where there shouldn't be.
