The boy turns 14 tomorrow. When I asked him what he wanted for his birthday, he tells me "a 3d printer"

I was pretty stoked. His kit will come in tomorrow and we'll hopefully have it built tomorrow night or Tuesday.

He loves and is good at math, so hopefully this will get him focused on engineering as a career.

double parenting win- 1- raise him to want an awesome 3d printer, 2- actually get him that awesome 3d printer.

What's the first thing he wants to print with it?

F1 cars - though he isn't into cars, he wants to print some models and sell them to my co-workers at F1 next weekend.

What model did he get? And why?

It is a Rep Rap Prusa i3 based kit from Hictop. Seemed to have good quality components, though instructions weren't the greatest - mostly stemming from some recent design updates that haven't made it to the instructions.

I like that it used extruded T-channel aluminium for the framework.

I'll get some pictures up this evening.

Yeah, but he isn't the most ethical. Last year at F1 someone in the RV next to our corporate one had a Scooter cooler or gokart cooler thing. The boy arranged to rent it (for just a few dollars) and then talked our events guy into letting him have some extra sodas and waters. He then cruised the Premium RV lot selling drinks.

Pure profit after the menial cost of renting the cooler.

Boy's got gumption.
