A week without food or water because your Alzheimer's-crippled owner forgets you need them would probably do it.
Unfortunately, I can tell you, it does take a mostly healthy older person about a week to die from dehydration. It's actually one of the legal forms of euthanasia.
The prime reason I was not super interested in finding out what actually happened.

Betsy Arakawa died approximately February 11th from Hantavirus, and Gene died about a week later of heart disease. He was doing very poorly and had Alzheimer's. I would imagine Betsy was his primary caretaker.
What a tragic, horrible play of events. The fact that they wanted to live very private lives, and others respected this was a contributing factor.
The takeaway: If you have a relative or loved one who has a primary care giver, and you don't hear from the primary care giver in 48 hours, you might want to check on the dependent.
A dog will only last 48-72 hours without water.
I believe the dog was confined in a crate. A necropsy is planned.
Very sad all around.
