There was a golden era about 20 years ago where engines didn't really burn any oil. Modern manufacturing techniques helped the engines stay oil tight compared to the before-times of quick and dirty machining and fairly sloppy engine engineering that would distort the bores just from the head bolt threads pulling on the block.
Now, some oil consumption is acceptable as the engineers try to squeak more and more efficiency from engines. Low tension rings and valve seals, and some engines even have only one compression ring, for example.
There isn't magic helping modern bigass trucks get fuel economy like Corollas used to get. You gotta give up a little something to gain something else.
