I don't get it. If you're going to kill yourself, why take a bunch of strangers with you? Assuming you have that angle figured out, why a shallow decent? Just dive the thing straight into the ground. Assuming there is a legit reason for that, why no note, no point to be made, nothing? Smells weird.

Man. That's terrible. I wonder what will come out as a possible motive?
The standard TV trope (24, Blacklist, etc.) is that 'bad guys' threaten your loved ones with something horrible unless you do whatever terrible thing it is they want you do. Do you pick instant death for yourself and a group of strangers, or slow terrible things done to you and your family?
There's no way to know what on earth the co-pilot's motive was in this case, but in the spirit of this thread, put on your tinfoil hat and ask: who would want this plane crashed?
Good point, maybe, even Jack Ripper had a motive.
If the guy was seriously depressed (clinically, not in a 'cloudy day' sense) then all bets are off.
It's possible the pilot crashed it for no reason...wouldn't be the first time:

I don't think people commit mass-homicide and suicide for "no reason."
My point is it's a "reason" that only exists in their own heads. Not for any political or ideological cause.

I don't see that comment anywhere in this thread. Am I missing something?
I mean, I plan to watch it now, but only because you mentioned it, not because someone told me to.
Just messing around, I just wrote that in quotes for fun.
You really will enjoy the movie. Instead of a jumbo jet going down, it's nuclear war. It really is a similar concept though.
We've had this discussion before in some "what to watch" thread.....Dr. Strangelove is one of the better ones. I still miss curmudgeon's avatar.

You'd be surprised with some people then.....because the "no reason" is actually a thing. Those cases it'll drive you insane trying to figure it out.

I don't really like Stanley Kubrick movies very much, but I did love Curmudgeon's chewing avatar.

A bit of trivia for when you watch:
For the scenes with Sellers as Dr. Strangelove, note the numerous cuts and watch the Russian. They had to cut a lot because the cast and crew kept laughing and you can see the Russian trying not to laugh at one point.
The director tricked George C Scott into the over the top performance in the war room. Scott didn't want to do it, but the director told him to rehearse it that way and then shot the rehearsal and used it. The shot with Scott tripping was accidental, but they used it.
Sellers ad-libs most of his parts. When Strangelove stands up, that was actually Sellers forgetting he wasn't supposed to be able to walk (he was playing 3 roles).
Slim Pickens (Maj Kong) had no idea the movie was a comedy (he of course played the role straight).

Co-Pilot had a medical leave note for what appears to be on-going illness. No mention of physical or mental.
Wonder if he had some sort of inoperable cancer.
Looks like mental problems:

Can you imagine how incredibly depressed and nihilistic you'd have to feel to off 150 other people with yourself? Holy hell, it's depressing to think about.

I wonder if we'll ever find out what, if any, drugs this guy was taking to treat his depression. The use of anti-depressants seems to correlate well with people who commit mass murder.
Looks like he may have planned this ahead of time:
