In honor of this occasion I give you the re-print of the famous on-line joke.

If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

  1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash........

Twice a day.

  1. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

  2. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart! it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason you would simply accept this.

  3. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

  4. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

  5. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

  6. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

  7. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

  8. Every time a new car was introd! uced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

  9. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off.

Yeah, now GM is sure to fail! I mean, an exec from a company that can't make products that work well with other products that were designed to work with it is now helping to run a company that can't make decent products unless it's planning on nixing said product immediately.

There go the suppliers! They'll begin to incorporate the suppliers products within their code, I mean the car and then try to run the suppliers out of business.

Actually, they should have gone with someone from Apple. Everything would be proprietary, but that's how cars work.

Microsoft is more like a kit car company. They don't know what the hell you're going to put in the frame, but it's expected to work

But as bad as MS is they certainly are profitable...

Maybe that is what GM saw in Liddell...

So what does the CFO have to do with car design again?

The CFO is probably responsible for all the great GM products we enjoy today and the tremendous success that company has enjoyed. Who do you think pushes the orders down from the top for the great interriors and valve guides?

When they started letting bean counters run companies, that was the beginning of the end.

Corvettes and CTS's created by accountants....awesome!

I think GM's problems have been a little more systemic than just a bad CFO for a long time.
