Fox said: On Saturday, USMC Staff Sgt. Jason Rogers, who was killed in action in Afghanistan April 7, was buried in Brandon, Mississippi...Why weren’t there protestors? Planning ahead by the locals, as it turns out. From an Ole Miss sports message board, a tidbit of information… A couple of days before, one of them (Westboro protestors) ran his mouth at a Brandon gas station and got his arse waxed. Police were called and the beaten man could not give much of a description of who beat him. When they canvassed the station and spoke to the large crowd that had gathered around, no one seemed to remember anything about what had happened. Rankin County handled this thing perfectly. There were many things that were put into place that most will never know about and at great expense to the county. Most of the morons never made it out of their hotel parking lot. It seems that certain Rankin county pickup trucks were parked directly behind any car that had Kansas plates in the hotel parking lot and the drivers mysteriously disappeared until after the funeral was over. Police were called but their wrecker service was running behind and it was going to be a few hours before they could tow the trucks so the Kansas plated cars could get out. A few made it to the funeral but were ushered away to be questioned about a crime they might have possibly been involved in. Turns out, after a few hours of questioning, that they were not involved and they were allowed to go on about their business.
People like to say "don't mess with Texas", but you really don't want to futz around in Mississippi.
I like it. Almost as good as "They couldn't protest our funeral because they were busy holding one of their own." But that's the Bas Rutten in me talking.
Wow, that's ingenious. Well planned on behalf of that city. Best part? Westboro can't even sue for that!

Your wrench makes about as much sense as a zuchinni at an apple convention.

Sure they can. And there's a chance they'll win. And winning that sort of case is what funds them. They're not a church. They're a bunch of lawyers pretending to be a controversial church to siphon money from people dumb enough to do stuff like this. Winning this sort of case is their bread and butter. With their legal costs being next to nothing, they don't need a big chance of winning to use this sort of thing to keep themselves laughing all the way to the bank.
If left alone they'd either:

How so?
You have people restricting other peoples rights, refusing to testify about public beatings and law enforcement selectively using there power in order to stop people they don't like from doing something that is completely legal.
How do you like them apples? Looks like an apple to me.
(note: I completely abhor what the WBC people do)

Which makes perfect sense....
...assuming your son, daughter, etc., wasn't killed in afghanistan.

Yep. It sucks, but yep.

So keeping them away from one, while funding their ability to protest another dozen is worth it?

Black people are born black. E36 M3 heads decide to be E36 M3 heads. Make sense?
And yes, I get it. I don't think there should be laws written to silence these morons. I do, however, like creative solutions to the problem. i.e. if I run the towing company, and get a heads-up as to what's going on, I'm WAAAAAY too busy to come out and move somebody's pickup.

Right. Freedoms are only protected if they're popular.
WBC is good at these cases, and their odds of winning money on this are better than average for them. They most likely will make big $$ on this. Which allows them to keep doing it.

When they win this hypothetical lawsuit, perhaps I will agree with you. But as long as we're in hypothetical land, what I'm saying is, if you'd allow these people to do this E36 M3 at your son's or daughter's or neighbor's or friend's funeral, shame on you. I'd go to jail, get spit on, punched in the face, whatever, before I allowed something like this to happen to my family.
There are laws, and then there is right and wrong. Why do you feel the need to protect these morons and totally ignore the rights of the person that died fighting for our freedom and the people that loved him. Because it's the law? That's berkeleyed up thinking.
And the law suits? That's a separate problem, and doesn't change that what they are doing is wrong.

Oh, I see. So it's not OK to beat up black people (and for others to pretend they didn't see it) because you don't like them. But if there is a white guy that puts on black makeup it's beatin' time!?

I'm right there with you, brother. If it were my son and they showed up, the end result would be more funerals.

Yes, that is EXACTLY what I meant. I'm done here.

They win these lawsuits all the time. This particular one may be hypothetical at this point, but these lawsuits are why they do it. And they're very, very good at it. It's what funds them.
I'm not sure what I'd do if it were my family.
One one hand, I'd gladly go to jail or worse to stop it from happening to my family (or friend for that matter, hell or random schmuck whose funeral happens to be close enough).
On the other hand, if I could have a part of stopping it from happening altogether, and do more damage to them is that perhaps worth more?
The question isn't: "Is it worth going to jail to stop them?" The answer to that is easy: Hell yes. I have very little respect for anyone who would answer differently here.
The question is: "If given a choice, would said loved one rather have a quiet funeral or get revenge on these shiny happy people?" That question's a lot tougher. And doesn't have near as clear cut an answer. If it were my funeral, and if I could pick ahead of time, I'd rather hurt them than help them.
