I wonder how long it is until they sell speed data to insurance companies.
In reply to AngryCorvair :
They own Waze.
The primary reason they bought it was for the social data. From what I can tell they're trying to merge the services now slowly.
I was thinking speed limit data is using crowd sourcing to verify their data for future autonomous car developments. Selling speed data to police stations and insurance companies is a good bet though.
The day is coming when your car's computer will rat you out to the authorities and the ticket will be mailed to your house.
If you are going too fast it could just shut off your car and alert the authorities to come get you. If you cleverly bypass the shutoff they will hit you with an EMP ray-gun and that would fry the computer. I wonder if there will be a race track option?
The only way around this is to restore and daily drive a '65 Fastback Mustang with an engine of equal vintage.

Speed limits in many roads are based on a percentage of average speed.
Drive faster people.
I doubt it'll get sold to insurance companies or the cops. There's too much deniability on a handheld unit. Data could just as easily be from the passenger's phone as the driver's phone.
It's actually been irritating the living E36 M3 out of me lately. Especially roads I've traveled before and managed to not get a ticket even though I can be a lead foot. I spend the next mile looking for the berkeleying camera never see it wonder if it's still up ahead due to the imprecise warning. Makes me take my eyes off the road for a split second to my phone which is always exactly precisely the same time that some moron with paper tags decides to come across three lanes without a signal. And yes much to my dismay they're driving a Nissan. Even though I downloaded Waze a few weeks ago I haven't used it yet. Thank God. Despite every Lyft driver saying they only use it. I love that Google puts the lane change up there for me mostly in time. I could care less about the revenue collector I'd rather get in my lane early and safely.
I only use waze on extended drives, I used to use it all the time.
But I drive a lot slower than I used to, and on top of that waze will try dumb stuff, based on aggressive users, and I've found Google more reliable for good simple directions and traffic data. I use it to route for work every day, even though I know the route, just cause the traffic data is so good.
Noticed what you said in Google maps recently as well.
I started noticing the ability for me to drop pins for speedtraps about 6 weeks ago. But it varies, I can't always do it.
Also noticed the speed limit signs, but totally random when they pop up.
I'm a top 5% waze user in Texas, have been for quite a while... wonder if that factored into being able to do the pins in maps

It's always a Nissan going to dive bomb you, and it's always Waze that tells the Lyft drivers that yes, you do actually want to drop this person off in an alley nearby instead of at their clearly marked address...
