I had an agreement to purchase a 2003 Passat with a hurt engine and 178,000 miles on it gave the lady a sizable deposit and procured the parts needed to repair the car. The lady was supposed to bring me the title at work this morning and pick up the balance of payment. Instead her son came in and payed the bill off with my manager before hours and towed the car out. She claims that she will be dropping off my deposit at noon. but I am out a couple hundred dollars in non returnable salvage engine parts (V6 heads for their cam adjusters and chains).
Venting but still pissed.
That sucks.
I wonder if they used your deposit to pay off the bill?
Suckage. I guess you can probably sell those parts to recoup some loss - its not like there aren't broken VWs pretty much everywhere ;)
that truely does suck... I wish them luck in repairing the car
One of our Audi techs said he will take the parts off my hands next week.
I got an even bigger LOL out of something, Greg said the son towed the car out with a tow dolly... It was a 4 motion car.
That's what you get for counting your chickens before they hatch. Sorry I can't be more sympathetic, because that really really sucks. In fact, that lady sucks. Thanks for the lesson learned.....I'll make sure I don't make the same mistake. For that, I owe you a beer.
Wow, that is not going to fair well for the 4 Motion.
You will see this car again, now with an undisclosed bad transmission.
It will either show up at the typical VW Independent shop in your area or you will see it on craigslist or you will see it in the local junk yard.
Do you know where the car is parked? For $20 you can have an Orangutan crap in the front seat.
Karma is already whooping their asses. I will just sit back and wait for my money. If I don't see it by 1:00 then I will call Magilla.
Of course, after you have your money (not before) you can also have the pleasure of informing her of the towing error. It might even help to have a reprint from the owners manual stating this should not be done.
Afterall, if you did not provide her this valuable information you would not really be providing the customer all the service that you possibly could. Your boss would be proud!
Of course, like most customers the son may very well blame your shop for the damage since no one tried to stop him from self-ruining the trans.
I don't know whether to offer a beer in sympathy or laugh at their upcoming misfortune.
Man, stupid hurts sometimes.
Well, take it as a life lesson. Don't go buying parts for a car you don't yet own.

Everybody know that!
Just like everybody knows you should preflight a car before towing it 1200 miles for a Challenge, like everybody knows to bring a tape measure when buying a trailer and everybody knows to tuck Mr. Happy all the way in before zipping.
But there are those times......
Did you make out a purchase agreement when you gave the lady her deposit?
If so, you might have legal recourse on it... plus damages.

Wouldn't surprise me. I really, really, really hope you know where this woman lives. Bad on your boss for releasing the car. Wasn't he aware of your deal with chick?
ouch... I am betting that car is in the junkyard before too long. Sick engine and a sick trans... sounds expensive to me
Yeah! Don't leave us hanging. What's the outcome. WHO SHOT JR?!
(old guy Dallas reference.)
cash in the wallet is good.. now you just have to wait and hear about the passat at a different shop
Folks like that are their own worst enemies....and yet, as others have said, they will probably tell others (if they don't come back to complain) that your shop wrecked the engine AND TRANSMISSION. I see "stories" like this on People's Court all too often.

Stewart Gilligan "Stewie" Griffin
A few years ago I was selling a 91 GTI. A guy came to check it out with his buddy around noon. They poked and pradded, himmed and hawed for a while before they said they would think about it. An hour later a woman came by, liked it, left a deposit. A few minutes after that the first guy called back and wanted the car. I told him "sorry, the car is sold." He was bummed. Few more minutes later he called back and asked if I would sell it to him for a higher price and blow off the first buyer who put down a deposit. Really? What kind of jerk would ask that and what kind of jerk do you think I am to screw over the first buyer?
I told him to pound sand...
Worst of all, the woman was buying the car for her husband that was over in Iraq. I wouldn't screw anybody over, let alone one of our fighting heroes.
An agreement is an agreement. Karma will even it all out eventually.
That's exactly how I feel about it too, but that's becoming less, and less common these days. I've had people sell things on me when we've had a deal, 3 times in the last year.
