Remember I told you about Steve Tarrant, my Corner Marshal buddy from the UK that works races in a wheelchair? And of course, you already know the Olympics are in the UK this year.

Got himself signed up as a volunteer, presenting medals at the Olympic regatta.

Nice!

On a side note - I'm digging his wheels.

In reply to Matt B:

Matt, we were actually joking about that the other day. He couldn't find anything he considered "flash" enough for the occasion in the UK..and being a car guy he figured the US was the place to look for fancy "rims". And he was right, they're made by a US company!

Ha! Leave it up to 'merica to bring the bling! With the satin silver finish on both the wheels and chair frame I thought they were "stock".

Ever since I was very nearly paralyzed as a teenager and needed a chair for a few months I've had an interest in wheelchair design. It was a profound experience to say the least. It rocks that your buddy is still doing his thing.

btw - I know I'm bringing this thread back up after a while, but the disabled racers thread was a reminder

Yes, I applied, answered all the right questions, and there I was with gongs on a tray!!!!! And feeling very chuffed by it.

Wheels for chairs here in the UK mainly consist of spoked cycle wheels or the black "plastic" thick spokes. I wanted something a bit different so check the internet, found billeted aluminium wheels of various patterns from the States so ordered there and had the appropriate spacers added. And you can see the end result!

I'll be back on TV in a couple of weeks when the para's are on - and Team USA have boats in all 3 classes.

Hey, Steve! I had forgotten you'd signed up over here! I miss sailing. It's amazing how going so slow can feel so fast when you have to work for it. Much like small-displacement auto racing, I suppose.

Welcome Steve, way to represent! I saw a special about Alex Zanardi the other day that said he was going to be in the Paralympics. Thread about disabled racers got me wondering about Toly Arutunoff also.

TRoglodyte, Here's me and Alex from Donington Park 2004, when I got the chance to meet him.

I'd love to meet him again, but guess it's not possible this time.
