Thinking about building a backyard grill island - all the versions I've seen look generic and cost $Texas.

I want to incorporate propane, charcoal and a smoker in an l-shaped island, maybe with room for a fridge/keg in the future.

The question I have is, what are they constructed from? Would pressure treated wood work for the structure or should I use something more heat resistant? I found plans for one made from cinder blocks, but that seems way too clunky, and you have tiny openings for doors/shelves.

Anybody build something similar?

I want to build this just for E36 M3's and giggles.

How good are you with masonry?

Where are you located? An associate of mine was interested in starting a company building these. If interested (and within a few hours of Pennsyvlania) he could send some pictures of their complete "Tiki-Hut".

I know you want fire-brick for the inside bricks. I plan on doing one of these when I build my patio (Margie, wanna help with my patio?). I like the flexibility of lump coal, gas, and a smoker.

Cinderblock for the bulk of the construction, firebrick to line the cooking chambers, and whatever cosmetic facade you like to cover the cinderblock and make it look good. Your openings can be just about as big as you like with block, just use angle iron lintels.

I'm currently building a wood fired brick oven for my bread business. I may be able to answer some questions for you, but I'm no mason by any means.

I'd love an update on your bread business. Maybe a "business" build thread? Things still going well?

Now back to the topic at hand!

I have a build thread going, I've just been delinquent in updating it. Things are moving, just a bit more glacially than I anticipated/hoped. But since I'm doing as much of it as I can myself, I suppose that's to be expected.

I should have some significant progress to report soon, so I'll definitely post some updates.

Good information - I was hoping to avoid cinderblock by using something like metal and doing a more traditional stud structure that would be covered by a sheet of something (plywood or that concrete board you lay down to do tile).

Cinderblock seems to be the favored material though...

As for location, Sacramento, CA. A bit of a hike from PA.

You'll need to log in to post.
