+1...High gas prices make people want efficient cars, when gas is cheap everyone forgets about all that stuff and buys gas guzzlers. Raise CAFE standards and the auto manufacturers will just find some stupid workaround (probably a legislative one).

Sorry for going off topic, but are you drunk now? Where in Canada does speeding carry a tougher penalty than DUI? I looked up the laws for several provinces and every single one carried a minimum suspension of 1 year for a first DUI offence and an $800 to $1000 fine. Second offences are more severe, including larger fines, jail time, etc. Even Ontario's ridiculous, knee-jerk reaction, "street racing" law doesn't come close to that, except for the amount of the fine (car impounded for 7 days, $2000 fine, 7 day license supsension).

Please give some more info where speeding carries a more severe penalty than DUI. Even if you're not over the blood alcohol limit, you can get a 12 or 24 hour license suspension in many provinces if you're getting close to the limit (0.04 instead of the 0.08 limit). Can I get a ticket for "coming close to speeding"?
