Have direct experience with this...

Bought a PF-9 for a total beater gun, swimming, camping, sliding down rocky hills... Something I would not mind being totally trashed.

Read reviews, watched videos, took a chance... Bought brand new. It would not fire 3 in a row. Every type of malfunction. Tried a bunch of different ammo for 150 rounds. I was pissed but half expected it.

Sent it back to Kel-Tec as a last ditch, for free.

Got it back and I have almost 1500 problem free rounds through it. I am constantly blown away by the reliability of it. It has been in every bad thing possible. Months of pocket lint, salt water, rock salt piles, fresh water, pure clay mud, and has not quit yet. Floated around the Gulf of Mexico for a long weekend with a rinse off in the campground sink after and hand dried the ammo, several times now. Flawless. Its finish and components are worn and show a touch of rust if left alone enough without a dab of grease.

NOT a beginner gun. It is small and very light weight, a handful with the proper loads. If yours is a problem, give them a chance, it was very worth it for me.

PS, grab the OE mag extension. Makes the thing WAY more comfy.

I have one of these. I too like it for its thinness and size, it just disappears. I made a DIY OWB kydex holster and its comfy to wear all day everywhere.

If you limp wrist they will stove pipe, or fail to fully load next round. Mine was bad when brand new, and I was new to it, but after a couple hundred round everything has broken in. Stove pipe is harder to deal with but if it fails to fully load just smash the slide forward the rest of the way. I polished the feed ramp up as well.

Like Ross said, its small and lightweight, it will beat you up. Not the nicest thing to shoot a ton through.

For several years I carried what many "experts" considered to be a terrible handgun. IT was a first generation Taurus 24/7 Compact in .45acp. 10+1/12+1, 3" bbl. Thing always went bang. well, more boom because .45acp. Long trigger pull on the DA and a manual safety/decocker. Loved it. Dad wanted something smaller than the 5" 1911 he had so we made a trade.

Now, would I recommend a Taurus? no, not really. They have a checkered past and their quality is really hit or miss. Would I recommend the one I had? Well I gave it over to my father so yeah. It was a good one. But not everybody can afford a $900 EDC piece. So get what fits your hand, you're likely to carry and you are comfortable shooting.

Good. I like the shield for people with small hands but not for what you want. They are seriously stiff for the first 300 rounds as well. I have such large hands that I use a full sized 1911 for almost all of the steel challenge matches. We are seriously limited on what we can buy here in California.

The CZ is fantastic.

The Shield is a damn fine little pistol for sure, it's just I found something that would do the job better for me.

Plus the hop up kits from Cajun Gun Works are epic for the CZ's. I just ordered one for my p-09, so we will see if the hype about them rivaling the CZ race guns is true.

I was considering the pf9 for a while great size, weight, price, reliability. But they tend to have a lot of first time shooters limp wristing and using dirt cheap ammo. One generation also had a recall for a while having to do reliability issues or so I've heard.

I ended up going with the Glock 26 because the trigger weight wasn't so ridiculously heavy and got a good price. To do it all again I would consider the s&w mp shield. Very similar with a slimmer (less rounds) profile but still a decent trigger.

So, did the Kel-Tec ever get sorted out?

Wound up selling to fund my gas and hitel for the challenge. But yes, the issue was solved by kel tec.

In the future, try a Glock 19.  FMJ ammo seems to work best in 9mm, in my experience.

Taurus gets a bad rap, but my little .380 TCP has been totally reliable, is way more accurate than it has any right to be, and locks the slide back when empty unlike other pocket rockets.  10/10 would buy again.

Taurus is looked down on by gun snobs.  I have some and I have no complaints.  They also have a lifetime warranty.  If you ever have a problem, put it in a FedEx box, overnight it to them, they fix it and FedEx it back to you.  Try that with a Colt.

Just about any ammunition works in the bulk of your semiauto pistols.....I carry 147gr +P hollow points in my CZ p-07 and non-expanding solid copper cavitation rounds in my 10mm 1911.

Absolutely DO NOT use FMJ's for personal protection uses, that's berkeleying stupid. 

I know my 1911's like round nose projectiles. So lots of FMJ and the edc loads are 230gr Hydroshocks. the 5" isn't so bad with flatter rounds but the 3" hates them.

For target,and learning how to handle said firearm it's fine.  For personal protection, 10 rounds should handle that.  My personal preference is the .410, for home protection.

I see nothing wrong with FMJ for personal protection.  A gun that functions properly is >> than one with super wiz-bang wonder-bullets that doesn't.

Safety and proper function.  Knowing how to handle one too.

for home? 5" 1911 to get me to the mossberg 500 with 00 loaded. For outside protection the AR takes care of the 'yotes trying to eat our puppies. 

My father in laws taurus 357 had to go back because the timing on the cylinder was off and caused it to bind up tight. They fixed it in a couple weeks and it works fine now. 

My Ruger LCR was sent back after about 500 rounds because I was getting peppered with ‘dirt’ every shot of 357. Ruger replaced the cylinder and timing works for free and it functions fine now. 

I think most gun manufacturers have dramatically cut back on their QC and rely on the end users to find the guns that are made wrong and send them back for repair. It’s probably cheaper to do free warranty repairs then to check guns for function off the line...
