Halloween is tonight, right?

6:00 and not one kid yet. :(

We had a slow start due to rain, but it picked up fast. I may still no go through all the full size candy, though.

5 pounds of Atomic Fireballs.  Well, OK, probably more like 4 pounds at this point, because I ordered them a couple weeks ago and apparently my daughter likes them too. :)

Ferrera Pan has an outlet store near Chicago.  I had to break my 5# at a time jaw breaker habit as I was over the top.  It's super convenient to get to with a great selection and prices.   How many grape heads can you eat?

I stopped when the cash register lady started to recognize me.

Even though we live right in a neighbourhood with lots of kids we are on a street that cuts between two busier streets so we get very little traffic, this year was about average with 11 kids. Because of that I try to do something different and make it worth their while to come up our porch to our door. Last year was 100g Milka/Dairy Milk/Aero/Caramilk bars, this year with inflation we went down to a normal, full size Dairy Milk Bar. In the past we have even brought home candy from the UK to give out.

We are apparently Trusty Providers.

Quiet night around here though. We didn't give out but 2/3 of a bag.

The wife did her usual setup. Next year we may just turn off the light. The neighborhood must be getting older.

We were ready, but we had approximately Zero kids.

First kids–the little ones–came a little after 6:00. Whew.

Last trick-o-treaters of the night: 9:45. (Started to really slow down a little after 9:00, though.)

We gave out close to 600 pieces of candy. Most kids got two pieces (except when it looked like we were running low.)

We're guessing an easy 300+ kids. Maybe 400? At one point, it was just wall-to-wall kids as far as we could see. We even had them bumping into each other in the driveway. Stay to the right, everyone, stay to the right.

Zero kids here, confusing.  I thought the tooth brushes we handed out last year went well.....

I always work on Halloween, so my neighborhood kids get nothing from me.

But this post reminded me of when I used to trick or treat and I always looked forward to a great big hug and a popcorn ball from Grace Hurley.  Every year up until she died, she made dozens of labor-intensive popcorn balls for all the kids.  I actually never really enjoyed them.  I would always eat some of it because it was a gift that deserved attention, but despite not really liking them.... what I wouldn't give for a taste of one right now.

For the first time in a while we had decent weather for Trick or Treat.  The wife and I, my brother and a friend and the In Laws sat on the driveway with the fire pit going.  We handed out a good bit of candy, had some adult beverages, it was fun.  I put LED bulbs in the porch and coach lights and set them to Candlelight, lots of orange, played a Pandora Halloween station loudish from in the house, all in all a good time.

The weather was absolutely perfect last night here as well!  It stopped raining right about 1745 with witching hours scheduled for 1800-2000.  I made some fantastic beef & barley soup and I got the fire pit started and my wife, my eldest, and I sat outside trying to convince the kids that it was really okay if they took three or four or maybe five or six pieces of candy.  For a while I had the little dog out with us and a whole group of boys came running up shouting "Look at the big, fluffy dog!!".  My wife was sitting there with the giant bowl of candy and couldn't get their attention away from Merlin.  They actually started to leave and had to be reminded that they were there for candy in the first place.  I can't remember the last halloween that didn't have us either soaked, frozen, or both.

Reminds me of my Mom - lots of Bohemian and Slovak food.

As a kid? Boiled purple cabbage or various types of sauerkraut?  Gross.  Stinks too.

Wish today she could make me some.....

Didn't buy any Halloween candy until Halloween, at which point the Xmas shelves were already up at the store and the actual Halloween candy was gone. I was hoping it'd be there, maybe even discounted...

Anyhow, bought three packs of full size Hershey bars (milk, milk w/almonds/dark) and got one trick or treater, so we're in chocolate bars for a while. I know Hershey bars aren't "good," but neither are Big Macs or 7-Eleven hot dogs, and I like one of those every now and then, too.

While we don't give out anything unless at least one person in our house likes it, we managed to cover the entire right side of that chart, from legend to psychopath. We also included bags of chips or Goldfish. I suspect some of our neighbors may have trouble affording groceries, and wanted to include something a bit closer to real food without going into apple and raisin territory.

I also had to stop my daughter from including roller skates into her costume. A lap around our neighborhood has about the same amount of elevation change as a lap around Road Atlanta. Finally she agreed to a trial run up and down the first hill on the route and realized skates were a bad idea.

You know, other than a Darth Vader or two, not much Star Wars last night.

Lots of blue-chip costumes that always seem to work: Batman, Wonder Woman, Spiderman, Woody, the Scream, cats, vampires, cheerleaders, Bumblebee, etc.

We had a traffic cone–future autocrosser, maybe?–plus, surprisingly, a few Ghostbusters. Fewer Elas than past years. A few kids riding dinosaurs and/or dragons.

We had one trick-or-treater, a girl who looked middle school age, with a very well put together costume. But I still have no idea what she was.

Well I'm guessing it was a canoe that bumped this.

We will be buying candy again this year, but the last few years we've only had in the 40-50 kid range. My dad's house in Sand Springs, the last time I lived there in 2016, we stopped counting at 450 kids........went through well more than $125+ in candy.

Haven't looked, the better half takes care of the grocery shopping. But I have noticed how much more expensive everything is when I see the CC bill.

I just moved into a trick-or-treating neighborhood for the first time! How much candy should I buy? With Halloween on a Tuesday, is that the day the kids go out and about or is it likely they'll be walking around that weekend prior?

If kids ever came down my street i would me giving out potatoes.  I set a bowl of peanut butter cups and m&ms on my porch before work and it's usually untouched when I get home.
