I want a connector for this guy. I bought a generic connector but it was too deep and could not reach in. Is there a connector that deals with this deeper housing?

congrats to seagate for making a sata connector proprietary. It's deeper than any typical connector I've ever seen. As far as I know, deeper cables don't exist.
Your best bet is to move the hard drive to a external case that doesn't suck.
This looks right:

and someone has it for $10 in the "used" section:

Alright, so I finally got around to buying it, and it plugs in, but no chooch. This thing only has a USB cable, no separate power. Am I missing some intelligence here?
USB should provide for both power and data transfer. Some USB ports may be unable to provide enough current to run the drive? If you have it plugged into a front panel USB port, try one on the back panel. Bad adapter? Bad drive?

5v at 1.5amps is not enough to power a 3.5in hard drive. The cable you bought works for a go flex, which is a laptop hard drive external case.
The base of that FreeAgent had a 12v power connector supplying the power. I've think you've proven there's no way around owning that base. External hard drive cases are cheap.
