has anyone ever sold their domain name?

I got a phone call this morning from a website developer that has a client that wants to buy one of my unsed domains.

I have no idea how to value it and was looking for some suggestions or if anyone else has been in a similar situation.

There are some scams out there for this, so beware. If the buyer insists that you get an appraisal on the domain name and asks for a certain company, just walk away. Otherwise I would look at appraisals from big name companies. I work for one so I will not make a suggestion. In the long run it is your choice how much you want to sell it for however. It would be worth more if you have an existing website and traffic on it.

Update, I sold it, it was probably a mistake but sold it anyway.

I had registered this domain a few years ago with the intentions of opening a business with the same name with my boys. They told me I should have kept it, but the economy had slowed our venture and I figured, why keep paying for something I probably would never use.

I followed your advice and had it appraised through a few free places and came up with $0 to $75 in value. So I figured I'd ask for $500 and see what happens....I should have asked for 5000.

Apparently someone who was associated with the original "BIG" monster truck revolution way back when is starting a new business promoting events. Who knew....

The appraisal sites are worthless. Good thing you didn't take the value they suggested too seriously. $500 is probably a pretty decent amount unless the domain name was a dictionary word or a desirable phrase.

Every time I see that topic I think it's asking who has soiled a domain. I keep thinking "man, that has to be a baaad trip to White Castle to soil a whole domain" I mean, I've soiled undies, a bed and even a city bus but never a whole domain......

I keep thinking a cobbler attached a shoe sole to a domain.

A buddy of mine during an evening full of drinking thought it would be funny to buy the domain buttpirates dot com. He just wanted the email address and then never had the guts to use it. Over a year later he had forgotten about it when he recieved an offer of 2 grand for it.

Needless to say he accepted the offer.

My son had a domain name that was quite simple, and was his last name, for his CCTV business. Business went bust, he ignored the domain for several years. He got a call from a broker to see if he wanted to sell it. Told me about it. I got curious, looked on line for people with similar names, found an accounting firm real close. I called, talked to Mr. Hanlon, asked if he would like Hanlon.com. He paid 4000.00 for it. My son gave me 200.00 for commission. Jerk.

Some domain "parker" has the .com for our business, wants something like $30k for it. We're still just using the .org.

Same thing with GRM.com.

The company I work for could have had the www.'xyz'.com (not actually xyz but the three letter initials of our company) back in the day. They opted for the overly long and annoying abbreviation of 'associates' after a germanic last name. That guy was a moron. I remember when the news said all the three letter www.coms where all gone. I bet all the four letter ones are gone too.

If I could go back 20 years, I would buy winning lottery tickets several years in a row, invest in a couple key stocks, and be a multi-billionare, but best of luck with that $30K/domain gig .
