I am disappointed that volvoclearinghouse brought this topic to a car forum.
He can't keep his nose out of his buddies business, and with this post he has drug us all into the swamp.
It doesn't take rocket science (or a car forum) to decide that both VCH and his buddy have problems.
His buddy can fix the problem easily, but love is blind. (in this case it is not love, but simply finding someone who can tolerate your kind of crazy).
However VCH has a deeper problem, he may have many other friends that need help!
A real friend would help him bury the body.

I just need to find a man who raises pigs...
I know you want to help, but realistically, it's not your business and he won't listen anyway. You're just going to drive yourself nuts. He knows how you feel, not much more you can say or do. It sucks to watch from the sidelines though.

Thank you for being there for your friend. I totally agree with STM317, John Welch. Ideally he dumps this hot mess, but easier said than done. He's fortunate to have you to "work through this" and vent.
I faced a similar situation with a close friend. I tried to steer him in the right direction with more of a light touch, assuming he would have his fun, see the light, then get out. He was a smart guy after all and it was pretty clear nobody liked the girl. They are now married with kids. Even though he only lives ten minutes away I almost never see him, and when I do he seems miserable. So I dont recommend the light touch approach. If I had tried harder he may still have ended up where he is, but at least I wouldn't regret not having done more.
Correction: Never stick your hootus in crazy without a rubber.

And when you are done, ether pack it out with you or put some hot sauce in the rubber just to make sure she doesn't attempt an after hours deposit.

It can be really disappointing when you have different views on life with your close friend, especially when it's all about relationships. But maybe we shouldn't put 2 cents into someone's personal life.
You know, I too like to stir the pot occasionally with a canoe paddle
Did we ever find out how this thing played out? Might be a good story there.
