Is it because of that little faggot with the earing and the make-up?

Originally banned because it promoted inter-racial relationships. Doesn't sound like a "leftist" idea to me. Maybe right wingers should look up the history of the book banning before they speak, or at least do it with an even hand. (banning books on evolution anyone???)

Books won't stay banned. They won't burn. Ideas won't go to jail. In the long run of history, the censor and the inquisitor have always lost. The only weapon against bad ideas is better ideas. ~Alfred Whitney Griswold, New York Times, 24 February 1959

Incorrect. After reading this I turned around and there was no slave in the background.

Regardless of the root cause, PCness has gone way too far. I'm all for everyone being nice and respectful to each other, but why do people not know when to say enough is enough? Leave history alone (including "money for nothing"), and be reasonable about the present.

In reply to bravenrace:

I agree. PC has gotten out of hand. The word was used in the book to make a point of how we treated/regarded our fellow man at the time. A good history lesson.

But I can see how "faggot" being used as a slander is offensive. You're implying that being gay is a bad thing. So using "gay" and "faggot" to describe something you don't like is offensive to those who are gay. It's all about context.
Call somebody a Bob costas and punch them in the face and you'll be charged with assault.

Call somebody a faggot and punch them in the face, you'll be charged with a hate crime. Same with the the "n" word.

I think the point here is that nearly everything is offensive to someone. At the end of the day, who cares how offensive it was to anyone? I lack empathy, I suppose, but lady justice is supposed to be blind.

Offensive or not, don't you think as a society we should no longer judge and look down on gays and lesbians? Shunning the word not to avoid offending, but shunning the word because it's degrading to gays.

I don't think books should be banned or censored, but I don't think anyone here (admittedly) would use the "n" word in normal conversation. Why? Because it was censored in books? No, because it's offensive. Faggot, gay, or queer should be handled in the same manner.

Reminds me of a story I heard a while back. Vocabulary people, what is a word that starts with N, but means Miserly or Thrifty to an incredible extent? The word in question has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with race, gender, creed or color, but will get you just as fired/banned/ass-kicked-if-youre-in-the-wrong-part-of-town as its truly offensive N-word pseudo-homonym.

Hmmm either someone is very uneducated or else they are being sarcastic. Which is it? Where's that sarcasm font when you need it?

Why don't we designate a font as a sarcasm font or joke font and then we won't get so confused.
