So I'm driving home enjoying my Vette. I live about a half hour outside of BTV--rural country/farms/etc. On my way home I pass a few homes that have chickens running around the yard. I know they're there so I look for them as there is no fencing. I'm following a silver cobalt. It sees the chickens. It's a popular road. I'm sure he drives it as often as I do. He slows, centers the car, and ACCELERATES over the chicken in the middle of the road! Feathers everywhere. Chicken not dead, but certainly will be. Does that ass stop? NO. He takes off. I'm pissed. That's just not cool. I catch him and get his plate number to give to the woman who owns the chickens. Sure, they should have been behind a fence. Almost never are in this state (VT). Doesn't matter. He had ample time to stop, was not in jeopardy of being hurt, and was never in a bad position. The woman was upset. This was some special breed. Didn't look like your common farm chicken.

Asshat, hope you get the boot some day!

I feel little better now.

I had something like that happen to me once. Here at the shore, we get turtles that cross the roads to get out of the marshes and onto higher land to lay their eggs.. in summer this leads to turtle carnage.

A number of years ago when I was in my early 20s.. I saw one about to attempt to cross a major road into and out of Ocean City NJ.. so I pulled over to grab her and help her across.. as I make my way over.. less than 10 feet from her and beginning to bend over, some asshat swerved onto the shoulder to squash her right in front of me.. missing my head by five feet and my car by less than 20...

If I had not fallen back on my ass in shock.. I certainly hope I could have gotten their plate

This is the time a pit maneuver should be legal.

I had a kid drive up in my yard once trying to hit my cat. At the time I was standing in the side yard beside my idling, ragged out, two door, Delta 88. I wish I could have seen his face when it came out from beside the house and onto the street sideways. I was in my 20s at the time, much more fit, and much less worried about consequences. When I slide up behind him at the end of the street and flung the door open, I thought he was going to start crying. I'm reasonably certain he never made that mistake again.

I feel less bad for accidentally hitting a crow this morning. At least mine died when it hit the windshield after hitting the front bumper. Didn't see it on the side of the road, it was still dark.

Not cool, but if you make the choice to let your chickens stand around in the road you really shouldn't be mad at anyone but yourself.

To show the possum & armadillo that it could be done.

personally.. I kinda hope that chicken did some hidden damage the car.. maybe it will have a leaking power steering line, or a trans line. Something that would be simple to fix if caught early.. but expensive if left to leak

I always feel bad for accidentally creating roadkill, I don't understand how people that do it on purpose live with themselves.
fwiw I would beat someone to death if they swerved into my yard to try to hit my cat or my dog. real talk.

I feel you there Cory.. a few months after getting my bimmer. I killed a beagle on the highway. I ALMOST stopped.. but needed about 12 more feet.. came to a halt with the rear wheel sitting on it's head. I still get sick to even think about it.. at least I can be sure it did not suffer (long)

Anybody who deliberately runs over a turtle deserves to go directly to hell. Or a chicken. Damn, I cried myself to sleep after hitting a porcupine one night. Couldn't stop, there was a stock trailer on my butt. It looked up at me just before I hit it, looked like a big guinea pig - it was awful.

A few months ago I posted about hitting a hawk. He flew out of the ditch, I was doing 65, there was nothing I could do. I blasted him with my ladder rack on my van.

I pulled over and backed up to where it was laying. I did the descent thing and scooped him up with my shovel and set him in the ditch. I didn't want some white trash hilljack to think it would be cool to run it over with their lifted SuperDuty.

I tell you what, I felt like crap for a couple days.

Several years ago, before my wife and I met, one of her dogs (her mom's house is a freaking zoo) was acting funny, and they were worried he was rabid. Sure enough he was, and they wound up taking all the animals (another dog and two cats) and checking them for rabies. Which is stupid, because to examine them, they must kill them. berkeleying stupid.

Anywho, after that her mom was mad at skunks, because it was believed a skunk was what gave that dog rabies, and she swerved to hit every skunk she could find. She got over it after a little while, I think she actually got one and felt bad about it, snapping her out of it.

i'll never swerve to hit an animal, but i'm also not gonna go in teh ditch and wind up upside down and on fire trying to avoid one, either.. i've never felt bad about hitting a skunk or racoon- well, i didn't really like the after effects of hitting that one skunk since it stunk for about a week..

got my mom's 86 Mustang up on 2 wheels when i hit a HUGE racoon that decided to dive out of the ditch in front of me.. that was kinda fun..

kinda felt bad when i hit that one fox..

i did kinda feel bad when i hit a great owl.. came around a corner at about 60mph just after sunset.. saw -something- in the road in front of me and lifted off the gas.. then i saw it's head turn and those two HUGE eyes were looking at me.. i hit it just as he got his wings deployed to try to fly away. it's a freaky experience when something goes from about 4" wide to over 6 feet wide just before you hit it with the front bumper of a 76 Monte Carlo..

about a month later, i took out an entire flock of sparrows with my '80 Malibu at that exact same spot.. there was a dead bird in almost every little square in the grille, and about a dozen of them embedded in various nooks and crannies under the hood..

if you ever want to see your life flash before your eyes, you should try encountering a horse standing in the middle of the road just as you crest a hill at 60mph in a Cavalier. and it wasn't just a regular horse- it was some breed that's only slightly smaller than a Clydesdale.. i missed that thing by about 3 feet..

ever hit a rabbit den with a lawn mower? i took out momma and who knows how many babies with my grandpa's snapper rider.. the grass was kinda tall and i didn't even see it until the fir and bunny chunks came out of the chute.. i was only like 11 years old and felt bad for a while, but the family cat got some good treats out of the deal so i got over it.

I will make every effort to avoid hitting an amimal without doing anything unsafe, and i have mostly been successful, I only ever hit 2 birds standing in the road. Yeah people who intentionally hit animals are idiots.

I once tapped a dear on purpose. Key word there is tapped. Stupid thing was running down the middle of the road right in front of my car. I slowed down to not kill it. It kept running down the middle of the road. I honked to get it out of my way. It kept running down the middle of the road.

So I edged up close enough that the next leap it took, it's back heals knocked into my front bumped. Scared it enough that it leaped off to the side of the road.

I figure I did it a favor teaching it to be more afraid of cars.

Almost hit a big shaggy dog last week in a school bus. bus was empty and was cruiseing down the highway at top speed 45 when dog just trots out in front of me. I stopped about three feet shy but it scared the heck out of me as the dog stood no chance versus a bus.

I hit a Golden Retriever once when I lived in CA. It bolted out of a vet's parking lot. I was in my Chevy 3/4 ton truck. Traffic was moving at about 35mph. It ran in front of me, and I dove to the turn lane (so I wouldn't get rear ended) and got hard on the brakes. When I knew I was going to hit I centered up the truck so at least the tires wouldn't get it. I was down to <10 mph. I jumped out of the truck to see the dog crawl out from under and run down the street. I immediately pulled into the vet's to see what happened, and they were just stunned and didn't say anything to me. Since the dog lived, I left. Felt really bad about hitting it, but I'm very glad it didn't die.
