I took images with my phone of a house hit by lightning for the FD. I downloaded them from the phone and they are HEIC.  What is that?  I can't open them.

Is there a safe free converter?  I need to send them to chief 3.

Gimp is a pretty good (and free) utility that can do the conversion.  It's also handy for a bunch of other image manipulations.  https://www.gimp.org

Preview in apple devices will save them to jpg. HEIC is the "live" photo mode.

Windows 11 photo viewer does it too. Windows 10 does not.
