For a little more modern you could also try Caro Emerald.
Love Caro Emerald.
Gare Du Nord is another great European group in that same vein.
Also Madeleine Peyroux.
There's lots of great tango music with a similar vibe - Gotan Project "Amor Porteno"

I really enjoyed their concert. My wife had more of a meh.
I encourage you to look up Gitane Demone, album "Facets of Blue", in particular the song "Somewhere". Her voice is amazing.
Linky thing, never tried this hopefully it works

I'm actually not a big fan of Postmodern Jukebox. I find most of their covers gimmicky rather than inspired. I think most of the original songs are better than their covers, and that classic songs originally written in that style are better than what they come up with.
For some further fun bands. Asylum Street Spankers are awesome, but torch songs are only part of what they do. And uh... many of their songs are NOT appropriate for kids (<- NOT safe for work or kids).
They turned "Got My Mojo Workin'" into a fabulous torch song. <-Safe for work and kids

Saw Morgan James in a small venue a couple of months ago and we're going to see her again in a few weeks. She has got amazing control. Her husband is a heck of a guitar player, too - the first show we saw was just the two of them.
In line with this thread, Morgan's "Live from Dizzy's" album is a Nina Simone cover album that is probably exactly what Michael was looking for originally.
