They are not your market. Never try to sell a product to DIYers that they can build themselves. They won't buy. Do a little studying of JG's camera dollie inventions. He's doing very well assembling stuff any DIYer could do in an evening, and PLENTY of people are paying him to do it.

To expand on this point, and I am something of a DIY'er:

I could build a platform bed for my mattress very easily. But to do it right, it would cost about $10 less than a frame+box spring, and it would require me to move a bunch of stuff in the garage, go to Lowes and get the supplies, assemble in the garage, move into the bedroom, further assembly in the bedroom, then clean up in the garage... All in all, probably about 2 hours of time. I went with the frame and box because my time is worth a lot more than $5 an hour. I could be drinking beer and playing guitar for that two hours. And I did.

If this was for a guest room, I would have been able to find scrap materials and do it for nearly nothing. But its not, and I didn't want the hassle for something that needed to just be done.

Forget about what you think you think it should be sold for and figure out what people will pay for it. Then make a realistic estimate of the cost to make one (including your time at say $80 / hour) material costs consumables book keeping packaging time to get it shipped. Printing of instruction sheets and invoices. Now that you have that number see how it works with the number that people will pay for it. If it works go for it. Also figure something for returns and warranty costs.

Maybe I'm being pessimistic, but I'm really sure the market isn't bigger for this thing, I can guess how many people would be interested in it by the number of people who do a certain street-unfriendly mod right now. Even accounting for people who are curious to get this mod in a way they can switch on and off at will, it won't be a terribly common mod. It'll be good for rally cars, mixed street/track cars and survivalists' offroad vehicles
