They're a vine, so yes you need a trellis of some sort but it can be pretty simple structure. Do a search on 'backyard hops' and you can find pictures of some good examples.

I always lean towards stuff I can eat, myself. Do Blueberries or anything similar grow up near you? They are usually a nice spindly bush. Might need a lot, to fill in though.
