I recently bought my first new computer (Lenovo Erazer X315) in a very long time. This is my first experience with USB 3.0
The box has 3 USB 2.0 ports and 3 USB 3.0 ports. All my devices are USB 2.0.
I was under the impression that USB 3.0 ports were backwards compatible, but none of the USB 2.0 devices I own are even recognized to exist when I plug them into USB 3.0 ports.
Am I missing something, or is backwards compatibility a myth?
Have you updated your drivers? I can plug anything I want into my USB 3.0 ports, even ancient USB 1.0 CF readers and the like, and I've never had issues.
Yeah USB3.0 is backwards compatible both ways, you have some kind of software problem, which is highly unusual for a new out-of-the-box computer.
Well +1 for trying a driver update, I can't find anything else that would cause this.
Possibly an issue with the device drivers. Can you try to manually install the drivers for the devices you are plugging in. I berkeleyed up a Bluetooth dongle for my mouse once and had to reinstall the drivers. Apparently you can't use them as FM tuners.
There might also be an issue with BIOS settings - I have to turn off a specific USB mode (can't remember what it's called as I'm not at home) that improves throughput on USB 3.0 devices, but it stops my keyboard from working under Win7.
So yeah, drivers first, then USB BIOS settings.
