I.tried to watch this on the Netflix. It has promise, as I firmly believe that Appalachian hickbillies are more resilient than. Cockroaches, and we could all learn from them- but it seemed too contrived.
I caught a show on NatGeo called 'Live Free or Die' that is along the same premise. Kinda weird, especially the hippie who laid down with the goat to connect with it right before he slaughtered it with a knife.

i thought this was about hillbillies, then you go bringing rednecks into it..

I'm more used to hillbillies. Parents are from nc. Small differences.
I grew up in WV and later lived in AL. Rednecks and hillbillys are not the same, in fact, if either group knew how to read, they'd be pissed off at this thread.
In reply to T.J.:
You'll have to clue me in then. I'm from MS and having met the Southern IN and KY folk up here they don't seem any different to me.
In reply to moparman76_69:
I'm no expert, but as far as I can tell the easiest way to tell them apart is to look at their legs. Hillbilly's have one leg longer than the other and rednecks have two equal length legs. It comes from always standing on the side of a hill.
In reply to T.J.:
I see what you did there. In seriousness though, the only difference I can think of is that a true "hillbilly" is going to be more off the grid. I think as there are fewer people that aren't connected to at least some civilization the term took on a broader meaning. I'd guess you see the same types in Walmart no matter where you are.
Around me at least, the traditional redneck has diverged from a flatland hillbilly as it were, to more of a poser. Think realtree and brodozers. Hillbillies be smart in the ways of the land. Rednecks wanna drink natty and do stupid E36 M3. At least that's how it goes around here. Where my parents are from ( spruce pine nc) the terms are interchangeable. Sorta like what you get when you ask for a coke.
hillbillies run shine and are on the constant lookout for revenuers. they drive whatever they can get cheap- be it a car, truck, or moped.. these are the people that still talk about the "War of Northern Aggression"...
rednecks drive big trucks and they like to get drunk and fight. i guess mndsm's "flatland hillbilly" description is a fairly good way to think about it.. they are too busy working 80 hour weeks to think too much about wars that happened 150 years ago..
We had city boys trying to be country when I grew up, driving big trucks daddy bought that never saw mud. I see quite a bit of that here also.
I guess I should use good ol boy instead.
Oh and nothing pisses me off more than seeing some punk in his brodozer driving around with a confederate flag waving off the back, specially when they're in Indiana.
Seen this show a few times- more for the subjects that they want to do for that episode.
It's not one of the attitude shows- all these guys are tying to do is survive on their own. They take scrap metal and make knives to sell, they spent an entire show of the effort to drag an old jeep out of the forest to sell as a project, they've done a few shows making alcohol, one show to "harvest" a bunch of fish and preserve.
The two of them are pretty bright, I think. Not all of the info is totally accurate, but that's ok. And one of the two seemed to make up his own knick-name, as it does not appear that's he's native there. But that's ok. That whole thing ends after the intro.
The whole concept should be appealing to this board- it's about taking junk and being able to sell it. On top of that, it's about living off the grid.
Growing up in very rural, hilly, KY, the folks I knew didn't have much, didn't want much, mainly wanted to be left alone and would get a little pissed at folks who didn't belong or wanted to interfere. Lots have roots going back to the mid 1600s when they came over as indentured servants. Did their seven year stint then headed west to what's now WV, KY, TN and western NC

Good ol boy is an excellent catch all.
I learned about the show from this forge webpage. I'm on a learning to blacksmith kick.

big difference between rednecks and hillbillies … my definition of rednecks isn't the nicest you could come up with … whereas hillbillies are just that .. us mountain folk
You know why Appalachian murders are near impossible to solve...
There are no dental records, and the DNA's all the same.
There's also mountain folk, who live in (or are from) the mountains but aren't hillbillies. Proud of our heritage, hard working and stubborn almost to a fault, we call the American Civil War "the recent unpleasantness".
In reply to Fueled By Caffiene: Check out anvilfire.com too.
No mountain folk around here but plenty of rednecks. They typically despise education, that's their #1 attribute followed by the Confederate flag prominently displayed and a tendency to love trashing expensive 4x4's. Now, don't take that to mean they are all dumb. Quite the opposite, generally; there's a native intelligence. Of course, there's the few that are really dumb; those are the source of much hilarity and funny mug shots.
