@DrBoost: I know what you're saying, and am just trying to suggest stuff that fits his needs rather than what I think fits his needs. Looking to watch movies has a lot different needs from a good listening room. I love high end stuff and have had a lot of it like electrostats and Revox amps, but try not to push new hobbies on other people. ;-)
@93EXCivic: The HDMI upscaling might not matter to you. If you lose the HDMI upscaling that just means any video sources you use that don't have HDMI out - eg, VCR, older video game machines, Wii, etc - would require you to change the input on the TV as well as the receiver. It would require a little more cabling as well, instead of just an HDMI cable running from the receiver to the TV, you would also need a composite and/or s-video cable.
I've always had good luck with Pioneer stuff and I bet the VSX-1022 would sound great. You can get it for a little less with free shipping from Amazon. It does support the HDMI upscaling.

I try to push my addictions on others. See that way, when my wife complains I can say "but EVERYBODY brings home rusty Italian cars, and old electronics, and matchbox cars, and cement chunks from famous places, and food left over from a celebrity meal..." to make myself look less odd.
It hasn't worked yet though.

To be honest I will probably buy used speakers since I already have some working ones. I just really want to get a new receiver so I can have a working setup without having to worry.
If I went with tower speakers, would there be any problem with using that receiver?

Depends on the speakers, but generally, it'll be fine.
It doesn't have preouts, so if you find down the road that it's not strong enough for you, you're kindof out of luck.
That said, i find Pioneers to be pretty "strong" in general.
