I have that same wrecker unit sitting out behind my shed if someone has a 1-ton or bigger truck and is interested.

I would and have but I would add a sling to a setup like that and be going a bit slower than with a trailer. I was never comfortable using just the bar unless there was already damage to the car. Towing anything fairly modern with a wrecker is going to need care and some wood blocks to prevent damage. You can get add on wheel lifts for wreckers like that but i was never happy with the one I had.
