Rural Southeast is in the toilet. Has been for several years. Ain't gonna change for at least 5 years, more likely 10.

Moved away from Pittsburgh in Feb for greener pastures for my GF and I (BS engineering and MS museums respectively) to Gaithersburg MD (DC area).

GF has a volunteer position in her field that could lead to very good things. (there was NOTHING in her field in Pitt, she was a Starbucks barrista)

Me, still hunting... been hunting since August with only one interview (ended up being a really poor fit). Only recent thing was one company a friend gave me an in with called and said I would have a phone interview within a week (they would call me), that was 3 weeks ago...

Found this topic on a break between applications....

Pretty good here in Tulsa............until we find out what happens to the American Airlines maintenance facility because of their bankruptcy. That could cost us quite a few well paying jobs.

We don't boom/bust like the rest of the country and our oil/gas reserves + the industries that support them tend to do well.

I just started a new job in August. Got a 3% peformance raise at my 90 day evaluation, and will be shooting for an "Outstanding" at my 1 year review which makes me elgible for a 4%+ raise.

All my friends I went to college with have jobs, etc.

Milwaukee area is doing great, at least from my small group of friends.

4 of us (including myself) have left high paying, professional jobs for higher paying jobs with better bennies. I left because my new employer called me, not the other way around. I work in manufacturing, another friend works at a foundry and 2 of my friends both worked for Rockwell Automation.
3 others have received significant (~15% on 75k) raises/promotions in the past few months.

Job market is good.

Seems to be getting better here in San Diego. Being a commission technician, my paycheck fluctuates by the amount of money customers are willing to spend. In my little bubble people are spending more money, which means I'm making more money. We just had our normal slow down at tax time, but that seems to have passed.

Around here sadly the main industry was logging and fighting with environmentalists finally got things so restricted many mills are shut down.

Sounds like most of you are in larger population areas.

State unemployment rate is pushing 9% and our county is pushing 12% or more last I heard.

Unemployment in RI is downright laughable, it's so bad.

I'm barely working at the moment, but thankfully my wife is doing well in a secure, good-paying job.

I'm trying to start something up for myself, but who knows how that will go.

I'm glad I don't have kids--that's for sure.

Things seem decent overall here in southeastern PA...unemployment is below the national average, people seem to have jobs overall and seem to be spending enough. I certainly can't complain.

I guess things are ok here in Knoxville. I don't know anyone who wants to work but can't find a job. Not saying that there is not just that I don't know anyone.

At work we can't get people to even show up for an interview. We need general laborers badly but can't get anyone in. Even the hispanics who fled Alabama recently are non starters. I used to have a five man crew and I'm down to a part time 66yo vietnam vet and a 50something Hondarun that has worked for the company for ten years. Both of these guy's can work circles around 90% of the people who show up work for a day or two and then quit when they realize how little they are getting paid for what they have to do.

Same problem we have. I transferred to this plant 1 1/2 years ago and our department has been shorthanded since I started. As soon as we find somebody, someone else quits. There's work around here for anybody who wants to work.

Had an interesting weekend. People are geetting scared.

Talked to a buddy of mine that runs a sporting goods shop, he said he has gotten more people buying fishing and hunting tags than ever before. Some are buying their first rifle right along side. He is also starting to have a run on ammo and firearms from some manufactures that have shut down orders. While talking to him I noticed people buying up quite a bit of emergency gear and the like.

After visiting with him I went to the hardware store where they were having a sale on gardening stuff and they were cleaned out. I mean they had virtually nothing left when it came to veggie gardening. The clerk said things were gone within an hour of them opening up that morning.

My fiance's father also was asking me about putting together an emergency bag and what to put in it. He also was asking about what sort of small game was in the area that could be hunted or trapped. He is basically very poor and lives off of something like $700 a month if that. He is both disabled and recovering from cancer. I think i will be helping out with things a bit more.

I'd almost guarantee that the crowd that is freaking out and buying guns and survival stuff and making sure they can grow their own food is listening to conservative talk radio. Those guys spread fear and doom and gloom like nothing I've ever heard. Every one of my nutty neighbors and friends that are stocking up on ammo and putting in big gardens are faithful listeners. Their lives are no different than mine, same jobs, same taxes, same everything, with the exception of where they get their news and ideas about the world. There's the off chance that they're right and that the world is ending and only those with guns and gardens are going to make it. I've got a hunch though that a lot of people are making a lot of money selling fear to a lot of people. There's a bunch of people hoping for a repeat presidency so they can spend another 4 years spouting the same stuff that has made them money for the last 4.

This more than likely accounts for some but not all I am sure. Around these parts I think the stress is getting to people, the area is largely ignored by the government except if there is something the west siders want. People that have never set foot out here have pushed through restrictions on travel in the mountains. The problem with this is it restricts access to firewood for many locals, for some their only source of heat for the winter. People out here basically have no voice because all the decisions for the state are made by those in Portland and surrounding areas due to population.

Anyway I know many around here that are growing their own food and foraging for meat and anything else they can get from the wild. It is the only way that they make it. I have noticed that some have begun doing things on the barter system privately to help get what they need.

On the plus side I own my land and vehicles. Oh and even if i do end up not able to afford gas the walking will do me good.

Well, the voicemail that turned into an interview just turned into a job! Full time temp job for the summer, so I'm happy for right now. In the past 3 weeks, all of my friends graduating in my major have gotten jobs except for the one who hasn't been applying for them. Pretty good for non-business majors (although all of us have at least business minors).
