SWMBO and I have this older treadmill that actually gets used, 3-4 days/week in the winter, more like 1/week in the summer if we can run outside. It has been fine for the last several years, but just recently is giving problems, and I know nothing at all about electric motors.

The issue started when running one day, I started to smell "electrical", or ozone. I pulled the cover, and could see yellow sparks through the vent cover in the end of the 2.25hp electric motor. I took it apart, cleaned the brushes and the surfaces the brushes touch. The brushes have lots of life left, they don't seem worn down much at all. After cleaning up the whole thing putting it back together, adjusting the belt, it now still isn't right. It just doesn't seem to put out the power it should, and struggles with normal running speed (to the point of stopping sometimes) for a while, and then it sometimes will be just fine, and at other times under heavy load it will have the strong ozone smell again.

I'm not sure what else to do. I did the only thing I knew to do. Any other ideas or should I just cut it up for scrap and parts and get another, better treadmill on CL?

Take the motor to a place that can rebuild it or diagnose it for you?

Add cupholders for your beer. Drink beer. You won't care about it anymore.

Have you cleaned under the belt? The guy who rebuilt the one for my wife's business said you need to take a towel and pull it across between the belt and the platform then manually push the belt to pull it across the towel. Your belt or platform might be gummed up.
