It's probably industry dependent, but I've obtained interviews for both my current job and the one I'm starting in a few weeks through LinkedIn messages - the typical hey, I have a great opportunity for you, I think you'd be a great fit, give me a call type thing. I get a lot of those but it's easy to weed out the ones that I am not in fact a great fit for.
Once you're at the phone screen stage, it's all on you, but LinkedIn has been very useful in getting me to that point.

Mine isn't the best, but I do keep up with my accomplishments. Like SVREX, I kind of use it as a digital resume.

Linked In? Do people really get job interviews and offers from that? I deactivated my account years ago because it seemed like a complete waste of time.
Yep.
Where I work now, the manager of my section found my profile through connections of my friend that works here. She asked him about me, if I was good, etc.
4 interviews later and I have a fantastic job. I may or may not have heard from my friend about this position if his boss hadn't asked after seeing that we worked together and he had written a recommendation for me on LinkedIn.
Now I have the best pay/benefits/flexibility of any job I've ever had.........and I'm typing this from the office in a T-shirt, shorts, and flip flops.
You guys hiring in Chicago? I don't have a direct resume fit though.
If you aren't a Tech Writer or have Software/Web Development experience probably not.
Plus they are trying to grow the lower cost employment areas. For instance, OKC. If you include me, we've hired 4-5 new people since January, acquired another large chunk of the floor we are on with plans to add more people by the end of the year.
I work for a large company, and a lot of cold call recruiting in our company is done through LinkedIn. Keyword searches are are critical to sifting down 50k profiles to 25. As others have said, list accomplishments in the profile, within the confines of what you're able to divulge w/in your current company. I won't even look at a profile without any details. Too many other options available.
As far as how I found the current job (or I should say, the 3rd job back in the current company), I found it through LinkedIn, and applied directly on the website.
As others have said, get to know friends and friends of friends that work for the companies you are interested in. A lot of companies offer referral bonuses to employees, so there's sometimes an incentive to referring.
