My youngest wanted to know, so we tried it.
If you shoot it through a 1/2" EMT conduit with 125 psi off the air compressor, the answer is a long damn way.
Like over my house, over the neighbors house, across the street, and almost to the house 4 doors down on the other side of the road. Better than 100 yards away. Pretty cool.
The bullet doesn't survive the experience though. We split 6-8 of them before we quit.
As a side note, don't shoot the kids. It leaves a mark.
Sorry, no cool pictures or video.
If you drop it out of a plane at 30,000 feet I bet it will travel at least 30,000 ft.

Interesting. How about the bigger nerf mega darts? Those might be more robust for better durability and a heavier projectile carrying more energy.

While entertaining, I'm sure that would be in violation of the NAR safety code.

Understood.
I’m in Southern California so I’m never more than one stupid prank away from a raging brush fire.
We used to shoot those from paint ball guns. Can confirm it splits them, but wow they move quickly

I chronographed some darts out of a modded blaster at 120 fps. My previous office was cool with Nerf guns, but I was told I could no longer bring that one.
Modding blasters is a rabbit hole you might not want to go down.

Did you try a sabot to keep them intact?

Careful. I got in trouble for A) gluing a nosecone and straw straight to the engine and launching with just that (neighbor thought I was shooting fireworks at them), and (B) loading them directly in 8' of PVC that jammed on the 2nd, uh, round, and shooting flames out the end like a torch (that time we really were aiming at the neighbors). Oh, gluing them to model cars didn't go so hot either. Well, too hot actually.

I have one of the cheap pistols that shoot those. I hot glued the top shut to give it some weight. Way more accurate, way more painful.
What happens to nerf bullets if you dampen and freeze them? Would the CSI people have to spend a lot of time figuring out how someone died from a nerf bullet to the chest?
Try a section on 4" diameter steel pipe, a butane torch, and a can of non-chlorinated (super important that it's non-chlorinated) brake cleaner. DIY flame cannon .

They're closed cell foam - not sure if they would take on water. The rival rounds might
pykrete bullet?
My kids have more Nerf guns than I can count with both my socks off. We've taken a couple of them apart for attempted repairs and modifications. I am impressed with the way they are engineered. Very cool product and understandably very popular.

Aqua Net hair spray has a lot of propellant in it. That was our choice fuel for potato cannons.

Paging JG!
Might have another Live Weds "let's do something different today" subject.
This is the stuff boys do or did when I was young. I remember discussing with my buddy what we needed to get to make our own gunpowder.

Yeah, but gunpowder was still pretty new back then.
I built a PCV "potato cannon" with a friend specifically with a 1/2" barrel so we could shoot nerf darts out of it. It leaves welts... Don't know about distance though, once they were gone they were pretty gone.
I think it was a 3" PCV chamber necked down to the 1/2" barrel.
Guy at work made something similar out of 1/4" tube, it shot sharpened tip welding rods. Wonder where he's working now.
IIRC, the trick is to ramp up the air pressure, like a roller coaster launch. That avoids the big initial hit.

Use a 1/2" steel dowel. Glue straw to nerf dart. Stuff rocket engine in nerf dart. Place a little black powder in tip of nerf dart for for secondary charge. (No, seriously don't do the last part. Or, really, probably any of it.)
